Franco Barberis (better known as Barberis ; born August 2, 1905 in Lugano ; † January 13, 1992 in Locarno ) was a Swiss cartoonist , ( advertising ) graphic artist , and fashion designer who was known for his sports cartoons and the athlete Tschutti .

Life

Barberis was the son of Pietro Barberis. In 1934 he married Carla Bruggisser, a daughter of the hotelier Arturo Fedele . As a graphic designer, Barberis was initially self-taught . In 1922 he moved to German-speaking Switzerland , where he worked as a graphic designer for the Bally shoe factory in Schönenwerd until 1926 and at Bally-Arola in Zurich from 1927 to 1933 . From 1934 Barberis worked independently . From 1940 to 1951 he worked as a fashion designer for his sister Elsa Barberis . In addition to his career as a commercial artist , he had acquired a loyal readership in the Swiss magazine Sport for 45 years as the inventor of the athlete character Tschutti . (A cartoon about the case of Ewa Kłobukowskas in Sport magazine was criticized for its undifferentiated image of intersexuality .)

For about 45 years he delighted the readers of the Nebelspalters with his contributions.

Series such as Bar-beris and Homo and his work, which included many portrait caricatures of well-known personalities, were honored with national and international prizes.
