Franz Darpe

Franz Darpe (born September 25, 1842 in Warendorf , † April 24, 1911 in Coesfeld ) was a German high school professor , philologist and historian . Many writings on Westphalian local history have survived from Darpe.

Life

Franz Darpe was the first of ten children. He attended the Laurentianum grammar school in Warendorf , graduated from high school there on August 27, 1860 and then studied theology , history and philology at what was then the Royal Academy of Münster (formerly and later University of Münster) . On August 8, 1865, he was awarded the grade “summa cum laude” for Dr. phil. PhD . On February 1, 1866, he passed the philological state examination (teaching examination).

After he had worked as a trial candidate and assistant teacher at the Royal Gymnasium, today's Paulinum Gymnasium , in Münster in 1866/67 and had worked in Berlin in 1867/68 as the tutor of the two sons of the Prussian ambassador, real and secret councilor Karl Friedrich von Savigny in the fall of 1868 he was employed at the Dionysianum high school in Rheine . Here he married Fanny (Franziska) Elperting (born January 15, 1849, † October 5, 1919). The marriage resulted in four daughters and one son. In the autumn of 1883 Franz Darpe was appointed as the first senior teacher at the Bochum high school , where he also ran the management business in the school year 1895/96.

On March 14, 1885, he was awarded the title of professor.

Darpe was one of the founders of the Westphalian Philologists' Association in 1884 . As chairman for many years until his death, Darpe worked successfully for the interests of academically educated teachers. As a thank you, his colleagues had a memorial with his picture erected over his grave in the Coesfeld Jakobifriedhof.

In addition, Darpe campaigned for the Antiquities Association and the Münster Historical Commission founded in 1896 . Darpe also played a major role in the preparations for the 700th anniversary of the city of Coesfeld in 1897, including the Festschrift and a Coesfeld document book, the completion of which, at the end, comprised 500 numbers, occupied Darpe until his death.

In 1891 Darpe received the Red Eagle Order, fourth class, with the appointment of a Knight of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern . In 1893 Emperor Wilhelm II was awarded the rank of councilor 4th class . On the 80th birthday of the former Chancellor Otto von Bismarck , who was dismissed in 1890, Darpe attended his birthday party in 1895.

By ministerial decree of June 16, 1896, he was appointed director of the Nepomucenum grammar school in Coesfeld, which he took over on October 1 of the same year and worked until 1909.

At the 25th Westphalian Philology Congress in Dortmund in 1909, the Franz Darpe Foundation was set up for teachers in need and their survivors.

Darpe died after a short illness on April 24, 1911 in Coesfeld .

Miscellanea

Walter Weskamp reports on the private citizen Darpe :

“He liked to go hunting. I have often seen him coming home from Lette, when he came from the train station in a green hunting suit, with a small hunting cap on his head and a wide hunting bag for the prey on his back, from which partridge often dangled. It was rumored that if he was not lucky enough to hunt, he had bought a hare from Laukamps on Hinterstrasse to fill the Sunday roasting pot. "

In the beer newspaper of the Abiturientia 1910 he is shown in hunting gear with the inscription:

“Take off your cap from here;
A satirist, a Sagittarius
Lies here in the damp hole.
The hares that he hunted
The jokes he said
They are all still alive. "

Honors

  • Streets are named after him at the main areas of activity in Darpes -Rheine, Bochum and Coesfeld- and in his hometown Warendorf.
  • Scientific ceremony with lectures in Coesfeld in October 2011.

In Bochum, on the occasion of the 150th birthday on September 25, 1992, a memorial plaque was attached to the outer wall of the grammar school on the Ostring . It was designed by the sculptor Heinrich Schroeteler . The inscription reads:

"Professor Dr. Phil. Franz Darpe
born 1842 in Warendorf, died 1911 in Coesfeld
Teacher at the high school in Bochum from 1883–1896
Author of the history of this city ” .
