Franz Hitzel (born April 22, 1912 in Strasbourg , † April 23, 1994 in Konstanz ; full name Franz Antonius Maria Hitzel ) was a German architect and construction officer (as government building director, head of the State Building Authority in Konstanz), honorary monument conservationist , university lecturer at the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences and local politicians of the CDU.

Life and work

Franz Hitzel was born as the son of the architect and head of the Archbishop's Building Authority of Constance, Julius Hitzel , and his wife Luise, born in Bieber bei Offenbach . Friedle was born in Strasbourg and came to Constance as a one year old.

After graduating from high school at the humanistic Heinrich-Suso-Gymnasium (1934), as well as after construction practice and labor service, he attended the Technical University of Munich from 1934 to 1939 , where he completed his studies with Hans Döllgast, among others, with the academic degree of Diplom-Ingenieur . After a legal clerkship and a major state examination , he was taken on as a construction assessor by the building construction department of the Baden Ministry of Finance in 1942 . During the war, Hitzel was used as a pioneer officer and chief of an assault boat unit exclusively on the front lines in the Soviet Union. After the end of the war he returned from British captivity .

From September 1945 he headed the State Building Authority in Konstanz for 32 years. During this time it was necessary to cope with construction tasks of various kinds. Since the territorial reform in 1973, the extensive district of the building authority extended from western Lake Constance to the French border near Basel and Müllheim.

New buildings were built: the building for the public prosecutor's office in Konstanz, the labor and health department in Konstanz, some hospitals for the Reichenau state psychiatric hospital, the finance and health department in Überlingen, then freelance high above the lake between Meersburg and Hagnau on the Lerchenberg natural pulpit the place of honor for war victims and missing persons, on the Reichenau the catholic family rest home, some villas and the “glass church” “Maria Hilfe der Christisten in Constance with works of art by Albert Birkle , Gisela Bär and Hans Günther Schmidt.

For the monument conservator Hitzel, design, general renovation and research on architectural monuments were a challenge. These included the Reichenau Minster (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Constance Minster , the Säckingen Minster , then the New Palace, Reithof and seminary in Meersburg , the churches in Bonndorf and Öhningen as well as Protestant churches in the Markgräflerland . At the same time, Hitzel worked for 25 years in the districts of Constance and Überlingen as a voluntary monument conservator. In 1960 he was appointed to the monument council of the government district of South Baden .

In 1946, Hitzel and building officer Seilnacht founded the architecture department at the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences . As a lecturer, he took on the teaching assignment for building history and monument preservation the following year, which he held until 1987 (80 semesters). In 1978 the Minister of Education appointed him honorary professor .

Franz Hitzel was a member of the Association of Catholic Men and Women ( Bund New Germany ) and the Unitas Association .

From his marriage to Esther geb. Waidele had three daughters. In 1994 Franz Hitzel died in Constance.

politics

Franz Hitzel was a district councilor for the CDU from 1953 to 1959 in the district council of the Constance district . His commitment was primarily to the preservation of monuments and the protection of the Lake Constance landscape.

From 1956 to 1962 he was a city councilor in the Constance Citizens Committee for the CDU and its spokesman.

Sailing

Franz Hitzel found rest and relaxation as a ski instructor. in the Alps or in summer as a successful regatta and cruising sailor on Lake Constance . As early as 1931–1934 he was chairman of the student sailing club in Konstanz. Thanks to his initiative, the Constance Yacht Club was re-established on July 7, 1949 after the Second World War. From 1949 to 1956 Franz Hitzel was President of the Constance Yacht Club. His merits are the new marina in 1953 and the implementation of the German Sailing Day in 1954. From 1968 to 1970, Hitzel was President of the international Bodensee Sailing Association. Pioneering, he oriented the association towards the restructuring and reorientation of the sport shipping industry that became apparent in the 1970s. He recognized the concerns of nature and environmental protection early on and campaigned for them. Keeping the lake clean as a drinking water reservoir and maintaining the cultural landscape of Lake Constance continued to be important to him as Honorary President.
