Franz Koppel (-Ellfeld) (born December 7, 1838 in Eltville am Rhein , † January 16, 1920 in Dresden ) was a German poet lawyer and dramaturge in Dresden.

Life

Koppel was the only son of the Eltville landowner Johannes Koppel and his wife Luise nee. Strüvy. He began to study history and philosophy at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and was active in the Corps Suevia Tübingen in 1859 . He switched to law and went to the University of Leipzig for the winter semester of 1859/60 . There he joined the Corps Misnia Leipzig (with Nikolaus von Baudissin and Albin Le Maistre ) . Finally he went to the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , where he was awarded a Dr. iur. received his doctorate . After completing his studies, he married Irene Schaeuffelen (1846–1921) in Dresden (Maria Theresia) on January 17, 1865 . She was the daughter of the entrepreneur Gustav Schaeuffelen and his second wife Auguste Luise geb. Seyffer. Having become financially independent through the “good match”, he gave up the desire to become a diplomat . After the one-year honeymoon, the couple settled in Munich . Paul Heyse , Friedrich Bodenstedt and Emanuel Geibel became friends of the house.

Disappointed with the failure of his first novel, Two Brothers in Jesus , he left Munich. Temporarily in Heilbronn , his wife's home, he went on a journey of several months through Spain . Then he traveled to the North Cape via Sweden and Norway . In the spring of 1869 he bought a large house in Dresden. He left the garden pavilion to Hans von Marées , who was a permanent guest of the house until he moved to Florence . In 1871 , Koppel completed his habilitation at the Dresden Polytechnic for cultural history . After five years as a private lecturer , he was appointed associate professor in 1876 . When his Spartacus failed at the Royal Court Theater in Dresden in 1875 , the spouses became estranged. Koppel's wife saw her wish for a very famous man unfulfilled. She divorced and married Adolf von Hildebrand in Florence in 1877 .

Koppel gave up his professorship and switched to journalism . In 1877 he became a feature section editor for the Dresdner Zeitung , later a critic for drama for the Dresdner Nachrichten . He remained a stage poet. At that time he took the name Ellfeld after his place of birth Eltville in order not to be confused with the playwright Ernst Koppel . In April 1890 he became dramaturge at the Dresden court theater and in October 1890 he received the honorary title of artistic director .

King Albert held the highly skilled, funny, playful journalist in high regard. When his life became cloudy six years later, he gave up his position and left the Association of the Court Theater at the end of October 1896. From then on he withdrew, who had already lost his only son earlier, and lived in quiet contemplation and sociable communication only with his own work. "

He could not realize the intention to write down his life story under the title: "How I lived and was lived." When friends visited him after his 81st birthday, he said:

“Children, you have no idea how nice it is to die. I feel how I slowly slide over, I feel how I am getting happier. "

Stella von Hohenfels-Berger and Jenny Groß liked to play in Koppel's pieces. Eduard Bloch moved some of his stage works .
