Franz Mayinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Mayinger (born September 2, 1931 in Augsburg ) is a German thermodynamic scientist . His research areas include combustion technology , optical measurement processes and their applications, as well as thermal fluid dynamics . F. Mayinger is the father of the physician Brigitte Mayinger .

Life

After graduating from the St. Stephan Humanist High School in Augsburg, Mayinger studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich from 1951 . From 1956 to 1962 he was a research assistant at the chair and institute for thermodynamics at the Technical University of Munich, where he received his doctorate in 1961. In 1962 he switched to industry and became chief engineer and head of the research department for nuclear and process engineering at MAN Nuremberg. He returned to the university in 1969 and became full professor and director of the Institute for Process Engineering at the University of Hanover . After that he held the chair for thermodynamics at the Technical University of Munich for 18 years until his retirement in 1999. He was also the founding dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of Bayreuth from 1995 to 1999 and then took over the chairmanship of the university council . In addition, he was head of the Bavarian Elite Academy from 1998 to 2002 .

research

Mayinger's research focus was in the field of thermal fluid dynamics. Here he initially dealt with physical properties and heat transfer phenomena , especially in connection with multiphase flows as they occur in reactors and process engineering apparatus. A specialty that has gained high scientific recognition was the early use of optical measurement methods developed in-house, as well as its contributions to reactor design and safety. At the Technical University of Munich, Mayinger consistently expanded the Chair A for thermodynamics and concentrated here essentially on the disciplines of multiphase flows, heat and mass transfer, combustion and process engineering - the implementation in more efficient technical processes.

Scientific societies and honors

Mayinger is a member of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (since 1976), the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1989), the acatech - Convention for Technical Sciences of the Union of German Academies of Sciences (since 2002) and the European Academy of Sciences and Art (since 1998 ).

He received the 1991 Max Jakob Memorial Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers . He is honorary doctor of the University of Hanover (1994) and the University of Bayreuth (2006). In 1990 he received the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , in 1995 the Pro Meritis Medal of the Bavarian Minister for Science and Art and the Bavarian Order of Merit , in 1998 the Bavarian Environment Prize and in 2001 the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art . In addition, he was awarded the Ernest Solvay Prize for excellent scientific research in 2000.

From 1987 to 1994 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer (chaired 1990–1992) and from 1979 to 1984 a member of the Senate of the German Research Foundation .

Political advisory bodies

Mayinger was a member of the Reactor Safety Commission at the Federal Minister of the Interior and later at the Federal Minister for the Environment from 1971 to 1992 and was chairman in 1983, 1984 and 1990. In addition, he was chairman of the accident commission of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety from 1992 to 1995.

In addition to advising on reactor safety issues, Mayinger also provided advice on science policy. From 1991 to 1996 he was a member of the Science Council and from 1993 to 1999 a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Council of the Bavarian State Government .
