Franz Schmidt (politician, 1818)

Ernst Friedrich Franz Schmidt (born November 28, 1818 in Niedersalzbrunn , Waldenburg district , province of Silesia ; †  March 29, 1853 in Matanzas , Cuba ) was a German Catholic theologian and member of the Frankfurt National Assembly .

Life

Schmidt was the son of a farm owner, Ernst Gottlieb Schmidt from Niedersalzbrunn . He attended elementary school in Stuttgart and the Protestant high school in Liegnitz . After graduating from high school, he studied Protestant theology in Breslau and Halle from 1840 . In 1840 he became a member of the “ Raczeks ” and in 1842 of the old Halle fraternity .

From 1846 to 1849 he was a German Catholic preacher in Löwenberg , from 1849 to 1850 in Elgg near St. Gallen .

In 1848 he was elected to the Frankfurt National Assembly as a member of the Silesian constituency 5 (Löwenberg), where he belonged to the Stuttgart rump parliament . He was a member of the Donnersberg parliamentary group and voted against the election of Friedrich Wilhelm IV as German emperor.

May – June 1849 participant in the Baden-Palatinate uprising . Fled to Switzerland. Charged in October 1849 for high treason in Löwenberg and sentenced to ten years in prison in absentia. 1851 acquittal after being charged with participating in the rump parliament in Liegnitz . Sentenced to death in absentia by the Zweibrücken jury in 1851 for high treason, treason and rebellion.

In Milwaukee , he participated in the gymnastics and labor movement from 1850 to 1853. Schmidt was the founder of the Freemännerverein in St. Louis (1850-1853).

Schmidt, who was seriously ill with tuberculosis, died in 1853 while on a spa trip to Cuba.

From 1850 he was married to a daughter of the politician Theodor Schuster .
