Franz Balthasar Schönberg von Brenkenhoff
Franz Balthasar Schönberg von Brenkenhoff (born April 15, 1723 in Reideburg , † May 21, 1780 in Karzig near Friedeberg (Neumark) ) was a Prussian civil servant and statesman.
Life
origin
Schönberg's ancestor Nikolaus von Brenkenhoff (* 1651) and his sons were the first in the family to carry the title of nobility . The family coat of arms is very similar to that of Brenken , without a closer connection being known. Franz Balthasar Schönberg entered the service of Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau , the "Old Dessauer". After his death (1747), as chamber director and co-guardian for the young Prince Franz, he did a lot for the Dessau region, in particular by improving agriculture, clearing large rifts in the Elbe, etc. He made a considerable amount of money through horse trading and army deliveries in the Seven Years' War and other happy speculations Capital.
Career
Friedrich II. Of Prussia appointed him in 1762 as a "Real Secret Upper Finance, War and Domain Council" in the Prussian civil service. Here he was successful in Pomerania and Neumark . He employed settlers, had swamps and moors cultivated and the Bromberger Canal built. By founding factories, he opened up sources of income for the country. In 1772 he led the seizure commission for the network district as representative of the king and accepted the homage of the estates in Inowraclaw . Through his varied activities his own fortune was shattered by too generous advances, unreimbursed expenses and accidents through no fault of his own. The coffers he administered were in great disarray. On his deathbed he asked the king to spare him. The investigation led to his property being confiscated, most of which the family only got back a few years later.

His first wife was Louise von Bergen . He was divorced from her in 1774. The couple had two children. The son Leopold (1750–1799) became a soldier and military writer.
His second wife was Elisabeth von Papstein . The couple had the following children:
- Franziska Karoline Philippine Elisabeth (1775–1858) ∞ Wilhelm von Knobelsdorff-Brenkenhoff (1769–1848) (founded in 1842 Knobelsdorff-Brenkenhoff)

Honor
The Historical Society for the Netzedistrikt set a memorial by Brenkenhoff on the Bromberger Canal in Bromberg, which was unveiled on October 27, 1894.
In the town of Driesen an der Netze , whose new town he built after 1762, a Brenkenhoff memorial was erected on the Neuer Markt in 1882, which was demolished in 1945.
In his honor or his wife, a born von Papstein, the following places were named: Brenkenhof , Brenkenhofsberg , Brenkenhofsthal , Papstein , Papsteinthal , Brenkenhofswalde , Brenkenhofsfleiß , Brenkenhofsbruch and the Brenkenhof Canal .
