Benno von Knobelsdorff-Brenkenhoff

Benno von Knobelsdorff-Brenkenhoff (born December 8, 1915 in Berlin-Moabit ; † May 28, 2002 in Bonn ) was a German officer , most recently Lieutenant Colonel of the Bundeswehr , historian , genealogist and author .

Life

family

He came from the old noble families Knobelsdorff and Brenkenhoff , his parents were the Oberregierungsrat and Colonel a. D. Hans-Caspar von Knobelsdorff-Brenkenhoff and Maria geb. Baroness of Mahs. On October 12, 1940, he married Mirjam von Grumbkow (born May 26, 1915 in Wilhelmshaven ; † June 13, 2006 in Bonn ), daughter of the sea captain Kurt von Grumbkow and his wife Ella Margareta, born in Wilhelmshaven . Career

He was very athletic from his earliest youth. During his school holidays in Pasewalk he learned to ride from his older cousin Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff , the well-known tournament rider. Later he gave riding lessons himself. He joined the youth movement Großdeutscher Jugendbund , which had experienced its departure at the Freideutschen Jugendtag . In Berlin he had attended various grammar schools because of moving: the Luisengymnasium , the French grammar school and the Realgymnasium in Berlin-Tempelhof , where he passed his school leaving examination in 1935 .

In the same year he was called up as a recruit to the newly created Wehrmacht . He embarked on the officer career. During the Second World War it was difficult several times, e.g. Sometimes life-threatening, wounded. On May 7, 1945, he came to the same in Soviet captivity from which he was discharged in 1950 after hard labor and malnutrition.

After passing the entrance exam for late returnees , he was given a place at the University of Education in Oldenburg iO.After working as a primary school teacher in Wilhelmshaven and his second state examination, he accepted the offer to work as a teaching assistant at his former university in Oldenburg.

At the end of 1955 he joined the Bundeswehr (Ministry of Defense) in Bonn and was then employed in Wolfenbüttel , Koblenz ( School for Inner Guidance ), Hamburg (Deputy Brigade Commander) and at the end of his service time again in Bonn on the Hardthöhe, where he was awarded the rank Lieutenant Colonel retired.

After leaving the armed forces , he studied history and historical geography at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , learned the Polish language and received his doctorate in 1984 with Walther Hubatsch with the dissertation : “A province conquered in peace. Brenckenhoff as head of the Frederician retablissement in Pomerania 1762–1780 ”.
