Frauke Stein

Frauke Stein (born April 9, 1936 in Leer , East Frisia ) is a German prehistorian and medieval archaeologist .

Life

Born in Leer in East Friesland, Frauke Stein grew up in Stettin and after 1945 in Bremen and Hamburg . In 1955 she began studying prehistory , first until 1957 at the University of Hamburg with Hans Jürgen Eggers , then at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with Joachim Werner . Between 1958 and 1961, she wrote her dissertation on the noble graves of the 8th century in Germany. Between 1962 and 1964 she had contracts for work with the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office and the Roman-Germanic Commission as well as a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute .

In 1964 she came to Saarbrücken to the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory of the Saarland University , where she was employed as a research assistant under the direction of Rolf Hachmann . Between 1967 and 1969, she wrote her habilitation thesis on the Bronze Age hoard finds in southern Germany. After that, she received a university professorship from 1970 and a C3 professorship in Saarbrücken from 1973. In 2001 she retired and is still active in research today.

Act

Her academic focus is on researching the relationships between the Germanic tribes of the Migration Period and the early Middle Ages and the Romans, and on the related problem areas of ethnic interpretation , acculturation and cultural continuity . Together with the German scholar Wolfgang Haubrichs , the Romance scholar Max Pfister as well as historians and geographers, she initiated the annual colloquia at Saarland University since 1979 on the subject of "Name and Settlement", which deals with the early medieval settlement and language history of the Saar-Moselle -Explore space in an interdisciplinary manner. From the analysis and synthesis of archaeological, onomastic , historical and geographical sources, the colloquia provided, among other things, important research results on the development of the German-French language border .

In addition, five volumes of the "Bibliographies on Prehistory and Early History in the Federal Republic of Germany and Berlin (West)" were written under her direction, which cover the relevant literature from 1980 to 1989 and which are supported by the German Research Foundation and the University of Saarland were printed.

In addition, she was involved in academic self-administration at Saarland University as a women's representative .

She is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
