Fred Berndt

Fred Berndt (* 1944 in Cottbus ) is a German director , set designer and exhibition designer .

Growing up in the “Lessing city” of Kamenz in Saxony , Berndt studied set design with Willi Schmidt at the Berlin University of Fine Arts (UdK). He took up stage design assistants in Berlin at the theater of the Freie Volksbühne and the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer a . a. true with Karl-Ernst Herrmann . As an assistant director he worked at the Schaubühne with Peter Stein and Klaus Michael Grüber . From 1971 to 1973 he was a set designer at TAT Frankfurt , then from 1974 to 76 at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg . As a set designer he worked a. a. for Adolf Dresen , August Everding , András Fricsay , Ulrich Heising , Alfred Kirchner , Peter Löscher , Hagen Mueller-Stahl , Wolfgang Wiens , George Tabori and BK Tragelehn .

In 1985/86 he was head of equipment at the State Drama Theaters in Berlin. He performed his first opera work in 1974 with the set for Così fan tutte at the Frankfurt Opera under the direction of Christoph von Dohnányi and the direction of András Fricsay. In 1975 he made his directorial debut with Brecht's Die Kleinbürgerhochzeit at the Nationaltheater Mannheim .

Berndt worked as a director and set designer at many theaters in Germany, also in Vienna at the Burg- und Akademietheater , the Volkstheater and the Theater in der Josefstadt , in Zurich at the Schauspielhaus and the Theater am Neumarkt and in Basel.

Since his first themed exhibition “Old & Young - The Adventure of Generations” in the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden , Fred Berndt has been working as a designer and dramaturge for exhibition projects and room staging at museums.

Awards

• 1987 his production was each his own wilderness of Doris Lessing with the actors Tatja Seibt , Uta Hallant and Christiane light man invited to the Theatertreffen in Berlin.
• His production of Joke, Satire, Irony and Deeper Meaning by Detlev Glanert received the Bavarian Theater Prize in 2001 in the “Opera” category.
