Frédéric Niemeyer (born April 24, 1976 in Campbellton ) is a retired Canadian tennis player .

Career

Niemeyer began his professional career in 1998. He celebrated his greatest successes on the second-rate Challenger Tour , on which he won a total of seven titles in singles and another six titles in doubles. On the ATP Tour , he made his debut at the Canada Masters in 1997, a year before he started his professional career . Due to a wildcard , he started directly in the main field, but there defeated the Australian Michael Tebbutt in two sets.

In Grand Slam tournaments he reached the main field once, namely in 2003 at Wimbledon . He achieved a respectable success in the opening round by defeating Spaniard Félix Mantilla , who was eighth in the world rankings at the time , which he was unable to repeat entirely in the second round. It took Wesley Moodie five sets to knock Niemeyer out of the tournament.

Niemeyer played between 1999 and 2009 in a total of 18 matches for the Canadian Davis Cup team . While his balance in the singles is just under negative with 9:11, his double balance with 13: 2 is clearly positive. With the exception of two doubles games, his partner was always Daniel Nestor , who won 12 games together, making them the most successful doubles in the history of the Canadian team.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and 2008 in Beijing , Niemeyer competed in both singles and doubles. In the singles he failed both times in the first round. In Athens he lost to Taylor Dent in three sets, in Beijing he had to give up against Guillermo Cañas in the second set due to injury. On the side of Daniel Nestor, however, there were no better results in doubles either. Although they survived the first round in Athens in 2004 against the Slovaks Dominik Hrbatý and Karol Beck , in the subsequent round of 16 they were left behind in three sets against the French Michaël Llodra and Fabrice Santoro . In 2008, the pair were eliminated in the first round when they were surprisingly defeated in three sets by the British brothers Andy and Jamie Murray .

In November 2009, Niemeyer announced his retirement from professional tennis.
