Frederick Buechner

Carl Frederick Buechner (born July 11, 1926 in New York City ) is an American author and Reformed theologian and Presbyterian pastor. He wrote 36 books in various fields. He taught creative writing at the Lawrenceville School and many other universities in the USA .

Life

Buechner attended the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey , which he graduated in 1943. He then studied English at Princeton University in Princeton (New Jersey) , where he made his bachelor's degree in 1947 . From 1944 to 1946 he served in the US Army. From 1948 to 1953 he studied at the Lawrenceville School, where he graduated with a master's degree in English. Then he studied theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York, where he did the BD in 1958. In the same year he was ordained a pastor in the United Presbyterian Church .

In the summers of 1953 and 1954 he was a teacher of creative writing at New York University . 1954 to 1958 he worked as a clinic director for employees of a Protestant parish in East Harlem , New York. 1958 to 1967 he was chairman of the religious department, 1960 to 1967 student pastor at the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire .

Buechner was a teacher at various universities, for example in 1969 at the William Belden Noble chair at Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts) , in 1971 at the Russell chair at Tufts University in Medford (Massachusetts) , and in 1976 at the Lyman Beecher chair at Yale Divinity School in New Haven , Connecticut , 1979 at the Harris Chair at Bangor Seminary in Maine , 1981 at the Smyth Chair at Columbia Seminary in New York, 1982 at the Zabriskie Chair at Virginia Seminary in Lynchburg, Virginia and in 1990 at the Trinity Institute .

Buechner has become a versatile religious writer, writing in several genres including fiction , autobiography , essays, sermons, and non-fiction. His 36+ books have been translated into 27 languages. Buechner lives in Vermont .
