Friedrich Daniel Schlemme

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Daniel Schlemme (* 1967 in Berlin ) is a German painter and sculptor.

Life

After graduating from high school in Berlin in 1984, Schlemme began his artistic training by studying and working for two years in the etching workshop of his father Michael Schlemme, who uses copperplate engraving, the oldest gravure printing process, and has printed and exhibited a number of works.

Schlemme then studied visual communication for two years at the Berlin University of the Arts , with Joachim Dunkel and Jürgen Spohn , among others . In 1997 Schlemme became a master student of Volker Stelzmann , in whose class he had studied painting since 1989. He also studied sculpture with Yoshimi Hashimoto.

Schlemme has been a freelance artist since 1997 and has been shown with paintings, sculptures and drawings at many exhibitions at home and abroad, for example in Seoul (Korea) at the exhibition “German Figurative Painting”, which also featured Gerhard Richter and Georg Baselitz , Jörg Immendorff , Markus Lüpertz , AR Penck and Salomé exhibited. In the 2000s he taught contextual painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna .

style

An image impression heightened into the mystical in Schlemme's works results from the fact that he alienates naturalistic sequences of images with brightly colored neon colors. Bright trademarks, distorted to the point of blurring, are perceived and decoded by the subconscious like "relics". Schlemmes' paintings are painted and laid out with astonishing quality and care. His cycle “Hands” is also symbolically charged, in which elegant fingers play provocatively with the wedding ring or carefully reach for a pearl. They stand in the context of European art history and, for Schlemme, are inextricably linked to his artistic development.

Schlemme loves playing with opposites. Dark becomes light and rigid forms dissolve and begin to flow. The contents are reversed to allow free interpretations and thoughts. He chooses colors that have a strong luminosity and immerse the scenes in a mysterious light, interchanges colors and uses targeted lighting. Some things look like an X-ray. He first takes photographs that he manipulates on the computer - they then become a template for the painting. Motifs are everyday situations that get a different, opposing effect in his pictures and are sometimes placed in a strange context through playing with the exchange. A refrigerator door can become a soccer field. There are also representations that are reminiscent of flowing metal, cell divisions and the course of a river. Schlemme stimulates the viewer to think of his own, the viewer's perception is questioned. Schlemme also uses the visual image effects of the media world for this. Things of the banal everyday life acquire a strange remoteness and a high expressiveness.

In Schlemme's play with perception, his richly colored oil paintings also look like architectural studies. The lines guide the viewer's gaze, delimit and open up spaces, but are also axes on which inside and outside are confusedly reflected. But his abstract, geometric pencil drawings can also fool the eyes. In his works, he repeatedly deals with the perception of space and the objects in it.

Schlemme also paints montages of internet advertising, his own photographs and extracts from catalogs. He uses the aesthetic appearance of these images to create connections between them. His painting reflects the cultural meaning of advertising and its symbolism and shows its iconographic meaning for people.
