Harald Gnade (born May 23, 1958 in Prisser , Lower Saxony ) is a German painter , draftsman and graphic artist .

Life

Harald Gnade received early art lessons from his grandfather, the expressionist painter Curt Ehrhardt 1895–1972. After training as an optician, Gnade studied painting and experimental film from 1978 to 1982 at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste - Städelschule in Frankfurt a. Main. He attended lectures by Hermann Nitsch, who had a lasting influence on him, and was a student of Thomas Bayrle and Peter Kubelka . From 1982 to 1986 he studied film and applied arts in the visual communication department at the Berlin University of the Arts, today Berlin University of the Arts , with Wolfgang Ramsbott , Hans Förtsch and Hermann Wiesler . During his studies in Berlin, Gnade distanced himself from his cinematic interests and turned back to painting. He lived in Le Corbusierhaus and had his first studio in Moabit on Perleberger Strasse. Since his diploma in fine arts in 1986, he has been working as a freelancer. In 1992 he took part in Documenta IX in Kassel. From 2008 to 2014 he was a lecturer at the Academy for Painting Berlin, from 2012 to 2014 he led a class for painting there. Harald Gnade is a member of the German Association of Artists . He lives and works in Berlin and Sicily .

“Grace's artistic work begins with a search for form and space determined by plasticity. One focus of his work is to be found first in the formal textures that he chooses to provoke themes and terms (“Frucht, weak”, 1990, screen printing ). By experimenting with different painting surfaces and a sediment-like use of stone flour from travertine and carrara marble, sand, cement and pigments, the artist first searches for a crystalline materiality of color, for body and volume, light and space (1990–1996, “Cloth "," Tissue "," metaphysical landscape " landscape painting ). As a result, he creates a highly abstracted, gestural-structured painting based on landscape or figurative basic forms, consisting of many overlapping layers of color, initially following the Informel and color field painting . […] The relationship between the figure and the ground of his material-determined painting is so complex in its informal coding, as if the pictures were inspired by a look through the microscope , which tries to track down the whole thing in detail. ”Quote: Phillip John: Pictures about pictures - Discourses in Art. Daimler Art Collection 2011 Daimler Art Collection .

In 1990 works on paper were made on Japanese hand-made cardboard and in 1997 the first woodcuts . Grace pays his attention here, using the medium density fiberboard, line, and amorphous texture. During these years the artist worked on some sculptures in addition to painting. In 1992 he showed pictures in a solo exhibition at Dresdner Bank , Kassel, in the city program of documenta IX.

Harald Gnade, “visit me time”
(tableau of 72 ink drawings)

More and more reminiscent of geological processes, from 1996 to 2005 Gnade worked on groups of works of different, three-dimensional form and light-absorbing color variations, whereby the pictures already refer to topics of metamorphosis and mimetics . Themes of metamorphosis and imitation mimesis (The sensitive dress VII-IX, 2002, exhibition of the St. Matthäus Foundation, 2006 St. Matthäuskirche ), as well as a poetic evolutionary history of nature (tableau of 72 ink drawings ... visit me time ...) groups of works created between 1996 and 2005 (2002, Kunsthalle Vierseithof and 2007, Villa Oppenheim ). In the tableau created in 2001/2, Gnade deals with a kind of genesis in the form of a picture.

Ursula Prinz writes about this:

"[...] So the human individual is never represented as such, but is treated exactly like the leaves, stones, trees that one thinks to recognize in some of his pictures. And if the pictorial object is also the body, it is almost only as its appendix or aura and not as a solid object or - in the drawing - as a flowing and dissolving line that could just as easily describe a blossom. The flowing, constantly changing is the actual element of this artist, whose development is presented as a single continuum. "

In 2007, his way of working evolves away from the material image towards pure and transparent painting. There are groups of works with the title Metamorphosis , Black Flowers, Heart and works on Arcadia under a natural-philosophical theme . Biomorphic, materially emphasized, often monochrome color bodies or landscape fragments are symbolically, minimalistically reminiscent of moss, sponge, vegetation or swarms, of ephemeral clusters in an algorithmic style. Topographies of a weightless garden, which also functions independently of gravity, extends vertically, diagonally, horizontally or 180 ° upside down. The picture elements do not always follow the usual physical laws, change their colors and shapes, change their position, in a changing picture space, which is sometimes open, sometimes displaced by surface. Nature, partially detached from its original context, encounters “foreign” states of color, encounters writing, which metaphorically function as a kind of parallel nature as a cultural artifact in the midst of predominantly abstract pictorial spaces. Grace deals with the question of the generally prevailing concept of nature: Is nature usually that which was not created by man? Hundreds of notes with notes, text fragments, color samples and sketches form the framework for a continuously developing, narrative work.
