Friedrich Joseph von Coels , (from 1831: Friedrich Joseph Freiherr von Coels von der Brügghen ; * October 26, 1784 in Bonn , † September 24, 1856 in Paris ) was the Prussian district administrator and police director of Aachen .

Live and act

Descending from the old Belgian noble family von Coels , Friedrich Joseph von Coels was the son of the electoral Cologne real privy councilor Johann Heinrich Joseph August von Coels (1734–1790) and Catharina Theresia Antonetta Josefine von Haes (1758–1835), who lived for a year after the early death of her husband, she was married to the mayor of Cologne, Johann Jakob von Wittgenstein .

After school and training, Friedrich Joseph von Coels worked in the French civil service and was employed as a sub-prefect in Jever at a young age . After the French withdrew in 1815, he took over the management of the army fleet and became state deputy for the Rhine provinces and a member of the central army commission for the Rhineland and Westphalia in Cologne. With effect from May 1, 1816, the Prussian government appointed him district administrator of the newly formed Blankenheim district . Just two years later, this district was dissolved and integrated into the Gemünd district , whereupon von Coels was appointed district administrator and police director of the then urban district of Aachen. This office was exercised by von Coels , who had meanwhile been promoted to royal chamberlain and secret councilor , until 1831. Until his final retirement in 1848 he was still active in various sovereign tasks and managed his property. In addition, von Coels was accepted as a knight in the Sovereign Order of Malta .

In 1820, Friedrich Joseph von Coels married Maria Eugenia Freiin von der Brügghen (* 1802), daughter of Karl Joseph Robert Nepomuk Freiherr von der Brügghen (1767-1834), First Adjunct and Mayor of Aachen. Five years later, von Coels acquired Wilhelmstein Castle for his family as part of a foreclosure auction , which had previously been owned by his father-in-law and was now to remain the property of the von Coels von der Brügghen family until 1950. He also owned manors in Cologne and Koblenz as well as in the neighboring Kingdom of Belgium and in 1827 acquired Frankenberg Castle . Between 1834 and 1838, he had this complex, which has meanwhile deteriorated into a ruin, extensively renovated and modernized. After von Coels had been raised to the baron status in 1831 , he also took the name of his wife as a family name and his family branch was henceforth called von Coels von der Brügghen .

The couple had several children, including their son Franz Hugo Balduin (1823-1885), who married Maria Josepha van Houtem (* 1829). These are the parents of the Prussian civil servant Franz Freiherr von Coels von der Brügghen (1858–1945) and Marie-Luise von Coels von der Brügghen (1870–1959), author of numerous local historical and genealogical publications, v. a. in the journal of the Aachen History Association (ZAGV).

Friedrich Joseph Freiherr von Coels von der Brügghen found his final resting place in Aachen's Ostfriedhof .
