Friedrich Wilhelm Belgicus, Prince of Bentheim-Bentheim (born April 17, 1782 in Steinfurt , † October 12, 1839 in Villafranca di Verona ) was an Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal .

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm Belgicus was born as the son of the future Prince Ludwig Wilhelm von Bentheim-Steinfurt (1756-1817) and a born Duchess of Holstein-Glücksburg in the Lower Rhine-Westphalian Empire . He joined the Austrian army in 1799 and served as a lieutenant captain in the Graf Wenkheim infantry regiment. He initially served under FML Jellacic in the mountain war in Switzerland and took part in the Battle of Hohenlinden in 1800 . In 1807 he served as a major in Archduke Ludwig's infantry regiment and was transferred to the Reuss-Plauen regiment after his promotion to lieutenant colonel in February 1809.

In May 1809 he was made a colonel because of his service during the Battle of Aspern . As commander of the Vogelsang infantry regiment, he then fought in the battles of Wagram , was seriously wounded and was awarded the Maria Theresa Order in 1810 . After the establishment of the Grand Duchy of Berg , he would have had to end his military service under the new legal system. But he requested by Emperor Franz I . the dignity of a chamberlain and thus obtained the approval of France to continue to serve for the Danube monarchy. In the liberation war of 1813 that followed, he was given command of a brigade and took part in the battle of Dresden and Kulm under Prince Schwarzenberg . On October 4, 1813, he was appointed major general and was commissioned to set up the Austro-German Legion in Prague , which in the spring of 1814 was still doing important services under FML Bubna in the south of France .

After the Peace of Paris , Friedrich Wilhelm Belgicus acted in the interests of the mediatized German princes as their plenipotentiary and was elevated to the rank of prince in 1818. Returning to the army, he became brigade commander in Prague and in 1826 colonel-owner of Infantry Regiment No. 9. On August 20, 1829, he was appointed field marshal lieutenant and was appointed division commander in Padua . He wore in 1831 on the instructions of the Papal States in the federation of FCM Geppert to suppress the unrest in the northern provinces at and then was given command of a division of the First Army Corps under General of Cavalry of Wallmoden . At the request of General Frimont , he was given command of a reserve corps in 1835 and, in 1836, of the II Army Corps in Italy . He died on October 12, 1839 in Villafranca as a result of a cholera epidemic.
