Frederick of Franquemont

Friedrich Graf von Franquemont (pronounced: Frangkmong ), (* March 5, 1770 in Ludwigsburg ; † January 2, 1842 ) was a Württemberg infantry general under Napoleon during the Wars of Liberation and later Württemberg Minister of State and War .

Life

Franquemont was the son of an illegitimate union between Carl Eugen von Württemberg (1728–1793) and the dancer Regina Monti. On July 5, 1775, at the age of five, he was accepted as an apprentice to the High Charles School. In 1787 he left the school as a lieutenant and went to the so-called Cape Regiment , which was rented to the Dutch East India Company . So he was first transferred to South Africa , then to Batavia and Trincomalee on Ceylon . In 1795 he was taken prisoner there by the English. He came to England via Madras and was released in 1800.

Now he entered service in Württemberg . He first became a captain and then rose in rapid succession, for example in 1807 to colonel of the 1st battalion of the Crown Prince Regiment. In 1808 he became major general . In 1812 he was lieutenant general , when he commanded the guard on foot until 1814. On November 6, 1813 he was appointed Feldzeugmeister .

In the Wars of Liberation , he was involved in the battles near Wartenburg and Bautzen on Napoleon's side . He was badly wounded in the latter. For his services he was raised to the rank of Count of Württemberg on May 27, 1813.

In 1815 Franquemont became chief of the Württemberg expeditionary corps in the Allied forces and received the rand as general of the infantry. After the war he was appointed Minister of State and Head of the War Department (Minister of War) by Wilhelm I on November 9, 1816 . From November 9, 1816 to August 10, 1829 he was also a member of the Secret Council . In 1818 King Wilhelm awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown .

In 1819 he became a lifelong member of the Württemberg Chamber of Notaries . From 1820 he reorganized the Württemberg military with Freiherr Ernst von Hügel . In 1823 he ended his career as a minister and became commander of the Crown Prince Infantry Regiment No. 6 . In August 1829 he resigned from his office for health reasons.
