occupation

Friends with Money ( Friends with Money ) is a comedy film of director Nicole Holofcener from 2006 with Jennifer Aniston , Frances McDormand , Joan Cusack and Catherine Keener in the lead roles. Ex-teacher Olivia makes her way through everyday life in Los Angeles as a cleaning lady and notices how little the life crises of her friends who are socially superior to her have to do with their own situation.

action

Olivia taught at an expensive private school until a year ago, but now she prefers to work as a cleaning lady than to be bullied by arrogant high school students . She mourns an unhappy affair with a married man whom she harasses with anonymous calls. Scrounging expensive cosmetic samples in department stores has made them a high art. On the one hand she is frustrated by the favors from her wealthy friends, on the other hand annoyed by her persistent questions when she wants to borrow a large sum from them for retraining. Olivia is friends with three couples.

Jane is a fashion designer, married to Aaron. Jane hardly knows how to leave good hair on anyone. She knows how to rock the injustices of everyday life into fits of rage until one day, for minor reasons, she has an accident with a glass door and ends up in the hospital. Despite her job, she hardly values her own clothing and personal hygiene. Aaron, a loving father and considerate husband who pays such attention to politeness and elegant clothing that Jane's friends think he is a gay in disguise, gets on her nerves.

For Christine, writing the script together with her husband David has become unbearable. She begins to hate him for the ruthless obsession with which he tries to cement her crumbling marriage by a monstrous addition to her villa, which negatively affects the quality of living of all neighbors, and for his hurtful openness. The two of them primarily deal with their conflict while writing the script together by letting the characters wage proxy wars .

Franny is perfectly happy with Matt, a multimillionaire. With so much money there are no career issues, so Franny concentrates entirely on raising the children and organizing lavish charity dinners. The only potential for conflict is the upbringing of their children, whom Matt is all too happy to spoil materially.

Franny tries to dissuade Olivia from their latest affair by going on a date with her fitness trainer Mike. But Mike turns out to be a lazy macho who is only interested in fast sex, demands payment for his company and gives Olivia a maid outfit for Christmas to satisfy his own voyeuristic urges.

To the next mutual meeting of friends, one of the aforementioned charity dinners, Olivia brings her chance acquaintance Marty, a seemingly unemployed loner with a hairstyle problem. Marty was one of Olivia's clients for cleaning who dared to sell her down on the price, and she's dating him more out of desperation. Marty can, however, survive among Olivia's friends, which is not surprising, as he reveals to Olivia at the end of the date that he does not work because he can live on a really high inheritance. The following morning they wake up in the same bed.

Reviews

“The comedy, narrated episodically, obeys the simple dramaturgy of a television sitcom. Even the solid performers cannot breathe life into the template-like figure psychology. "

“Unfortunately, Friends with Money ran almost unnoticed in the US, even though the film has a lot to offer in terms of expression and entertainment. This is not only ensured by the great performance of the actors, but also by the good script, which tells a deep story but still does not neglect the humor. "

- Markus Ostertag, moviemaze.de

“In addition to the naturally first-class cast, Holofcener succeeded in creating the real showpiece with the skillful layout of their characters. [...] As far as the staging is concerned, Holofcener holds back completely and puts himself completely at the service of their characters and their stories. Without any gimmicks, she just films the action in a rock-solid manner, which is not a really negative point of criticism in this genre. And you don't get bored anyway, the film simply switches back and forth between the individual storylines far too quickly for that, lacks conventional comedy dramaturgy anyway. Rather, it is part of the quality of 'Friends With Money' that in the end, even if there is one or the other development in the process, it only contains a section - without a clearly defined beginning or final end - from the life of Women shows how he can clearly stand out from the dozen products of the competition. DVD release

The German-language release on DVD took place six months after the cinema release under the English original title on March 6, 2007. This DVD includes an audio commentary by the director and producer, revealing that certain scenes were improvised and, due to Jennifer Aniston's involvement in the filming in Los Angeles and Hollywood , took place under constant pressure from the paparazzi . This is also evidenced by a look behind the scenes during the filming (10 min), as you often see the paparazzi taking photographs in the background during Olivia's restless car trip. A short recording (3:25 min) shows the premiere in Los Angeles and a slightly longer sequence (4:25 min) documents various interviews during the press conference as the opening film at the Sundance Film Festival .

useful information

Nicole Holofcener was initially able to inspire Catherine Keener for the script. She turned down the role of Olivia, but recommended her own friend Jennifer Aniston. After Frances McDormand agreed, the engagement of the other actors was no longer an issue.
