Fritz Wegner (General)

Fritz Wegner (born August 27, 1922 in Waldheim ; † September 1, 2007 ) was a German pilot and officer, most recently lieutenant general in the Bundeswehr . From 1981 to 1983 he was the commanding general of the Air Fleet Command .

Life

Wehrmacht

After graduating from a German high school for boys, he joined the Wehrmacht Air Force in 1940 . In 1943 he flew a Focke-Wulf 190 A-6 as a lieutenant in the 4th squadron of Jagdgeschwader 1 . On February 25, 1944, he was shot down near Crailsheim after an aerial battle with bombers . After he was promoted to first lieutenant on August 1, 1944, he took over the 6th squadron of Jagdgeschwader 1 as squadron captain . From December 1944 he was in charge of the II. Group of this squadron, where he was shot down again on December 25, 1944 by the American P-51 . From March 1, 1945 he then moved to Jagdgeschwader 7, where he flew the Messerschmitt Me 262 . In the last days of the war, from April 24, 1945, he went to Jagdgeschwader 300 and was shot down and wounded there with his Focke-Wulf 190 A-8 near Dillingen. At the end of the war he was taken prisoner. He achieved a total of 6 aerial victories.

post war period

After 1945 he worked as a commercial manager in the automotive industry and worked part-time as a journalist .

armed forces

In 1956 he joined the Bundeswehr as a first lieutenant. He received pilot training on propeller and jet aircraft at the USAF Luke AFB in Arizona . He was then squadron captain in Fighter Bomber Wing 33 in Büchel and Task Force Officer in Fighter Bomber Wing 34 in Memmingen. Lieutenant Colonel Wegner was 1960/61 the only commodore of Jagdgeschwader 75 in Oldenburg, Leipheim and Neuburg an der Donau and from 1961 to 1966 the first commodore of Jagdgeschwader 74 in Neuburg an der Donau. He then attended the NATO Defense College (NDC) in Rome. He was also deputy commander of an allied air defense sector and consultant at the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) in Bonn. From 1971 to 1974 he was in command of Allied Air Defense Sector 2 in Uedem.

From 1974 to 1976 the Brigadier General was in command of the German Air Force Command USA / Canada in Fort Bliss / Texas and from 1976 to 1981 as Major General (from 1976) Commander of the 1st Air Force Division in Meßstetten, the Lieutenant General from 1981 to 1983 was Commanding General of the Air Force Command in Cologne - delusion. He then retired.

The Jagdgeschwader 74 honored him in 2007 with a military funeral ceremony.
