Fritzdieter Gerhards (born February 2, 1935 in Wuppertal ; † April 2, 2011 in Cologne ) was a German director and theater manager. He studied art history , psychology and theater studies in Frankfurt am Main and Vienna .

Live and act

Dr Gerhards gained his first practical experience at theaters in Linz, Lucerne and Göttingen as an actor , assistant director and dramaturge before he first came to Theater Oberhausen as a dramaturge in 1972 . This was followed in the same position, stations on the stages of the city of Essen and at the Cologne Opera . At the beginning of the 1977/78 season he came back to Oberhausen as artistic director. In this pure music theater at the time, he designed the program in an independent way in order to distinguish himself from the surrounding opera houses. Almost forgotten works were performed again, there were a number of Mozart operas and European and German premieres of musicals . This was how the last possible German premiere of a Verdi opera succeeded: König für ein Tag . Even Albert Lortzing Casanova came under Gerhards again to a performance. He also used unusual venues such as a tent, the MusicCircus at the Niederrhein stadium. The Rocky Horror Show (directed by Manfred Repp ) attracted visitors from all over Germany. In the children's and youth theater he also expanded the repertoire for an adult audience. a. with performances of Friedrich Schiller's Die Räuber , Gerhart Hauptmann's Die Weber and Bertolt Brechts Arturo Ui .

In autumn 1990 there was a rift between the city of Oberhausen and Gerhards, which ended with an early termination of the contract.

From 1991 to 2002 he was director of the Ettlingen Palace Festival and the Wetzlar Festival . From 1995 to 2010 he also worked as a director and author for Cäcilia Wolkenburg, the stage play community of the Cologne Men's Singing Association .

Gerhards has staged a total of over 100 plays at home and abroad.
