action

In a fight between the young cowboy Tod Lohman and Shorty Boyd, the latter is killed in an accident. Now his father, the "cattle baron" Hunter Boyd, believes Lohman murdered his son. Therefore he asks his sons Tom and Otis to avenge their brother. Soon after, Lohman is chased through the New Mexico desert by the two Boyd brothers and a few companions . It doesn't take long for Lohman's horse to lame. When the rider was almost overtaken by the pursuers, he caused a panic in a herd of cattle. First of all, this means saving him; Otis is seriously injured by the animals. Tom then sends his brother home with his companions and continues the chase alone. Finally he catches up with the fleeing man. He tries to explain to him that his brother's death is due to unfortunate circumstances, but is unsuccessful. In an exchange of fire, Lohmann injures Tom, who kills his opponent's horse.

The wealthy rancher puts together a new team to pursue the cowboy. Meanwhile, he is supported by the rancher Amos Bradley and his daughter Juanita, who provide him with food. The two young people fall in love. When they want to leave for old Bradley's farm, they are surprised by the pursuers. Lohmann has to flee again.

The longer the hunt through the Wild West lasts, the more chasers are left behind in the many exchanges of fire. Towards the end, Tom Boyd shoots an oil lamp in a post office. As a result, he sustains life-threatening injuries. Death Lohmann saves his enemy from being burned. Now finally the old Hunter also believes the cowboy that he did not murder his son Shorty.

Tod Lohmann makes his way to Bradley's farm, where he wants to start a new life with Juanita.

criticism

The Lexicon of International Films notes that if you shoot back, Cowboy is an above-average western with a clear rejection of the glorification of revenge and violence.
