Robert Buckner
Robert Buckner (born May 28, 1906 in Crewe , Virginia , † August 1989 in Guadalajara , Mexico ) was an American playwright , screenwriter and film producer who was nominated for an Oscar for best original story as well as a Golden Globe Award and by the Writers Guild of America awarded Robert Meltzer Award won for best screenplay.
Life
After attending school, Buckner studied at the University of Virginia and the University of Edinburgh and then worked as a journalist and correspondent for the New York World newspaper. He later wrote stage works for Broadway , but also for off-Broadway productions.
Buckner began his career in the Hollywood film industry in 1937 when he signed a scriptwriting contract with Warner Bros. and worked for this film production company until 1948. He made his debut as a screenwriter with the template for the western Goldene Erde California (Gold Is Where You Find It, 1938) by Michael Curtiz with George Brent , Olivia de Havilland and Claude Rains . In the following years numerous other well-known film productions were made, such as the musical Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) directed by Michael Curtiz with James Cagney as Broadway star George M. Cohan and Joan Leslie and Walter Huston in other leading roles. For this he was nominated for the Oscar for the best original story at the Academy Awards in 1943 . In 1942, in addition to his work as a screenwriter, Buckner began working as a film producer and produced films such as Der cheeky Cavalier (Gentleman Jim, 1942) by Raoul Walsh with Errol Flynn , Alexis Smith and Jack Carson or Our Life with Father (Life with Father , 1947) by Michael Curtiz with William Powell , Irene Dunne and Elizabeth Taylor .
After working for Universal Studios between 1948 and 1951 , he then worked as a freelance screenwriter and producer. He had one of his greatest successes with the script for the film Sieg über das Dunkel (Bright Victory, 1951) by Mark Robson with Arthur Kennedy , Peggy Dow and Julie Adams, which he also produced . For this he won both the Golden Globe Award for the best screenplay and the Robert Meltzer Award given by the Writers Guild of America for the screenplay with the best handling of American problems.
Buckner, who worked mainly for television productions after 1955, wrote scripts and templates for forty films and television series by 1970 and produced almost twenty films by 1962.
