From Prada to Nada (translated: from Prada to Nothing ) is an American romance comedy directed by Angel Gracia from 2011. The plot is a Latino version of Jane Austen's novel Mind and Feel , in which two spoiled after their sudden death her father's penniless sisters are forced to move to live with their aunt in Los Angeles.

The film opened in some cinemas in the United States on January 28, 2011 and grossed $ 3 million there. The film thus fulfilled the expectations of the film distributor Pantelion Films . The film was not released in Germany, but is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Sisters Mary and Nora enjoy lives of wealth and abundance. When the two celebrate their father's birthday in his house in Casa Bonita and dance with him, their father falls and dies.

At the funeral, they meet their half-brother Gabe Dominguez, who came about through a love affair between their father. While reading out the will, the two discover that their father was bankrupt and that they not only can no longer go on expensive shopping trips, but also have to sell the house. Nora and Mary sell the house to Gabe, who moves in with his wife Olivia, but lets them continue to live in the house. When Olivia's brother Edward comes to visit, Olivia explains to the two sisters that they now have to find a place of their own and gives them an old box from their father.

Since the two cannot afford their own apartment, they move to the east of Los Angeles to live with their aunt Aurelia, where they meet her neighbor Bruno. To earn money, Nora decides to drop out of law school and find a job so Mary can graduate from college . In Nora's new legal job, she meets Edward, with whom she represents a cleaning community and wins in court. Meanwhile, Mary continues to college, where she meets Rodrigo and gets on well with him. After saving some money, Nora quits her job at Edward and opens her own office.

When Nora observed Mary being dropped off by Rodrigo at her aunt's in the morning after they had spent the night together, Nora confronts her and asks her if she really feels anything for Rodrigo. Mary says no and Nora says that she is only with him because he has the chance to return to her old life. Because Nora then calls her a slut , an argument breaks out between the two, which leads to the two of them getting out of the way.

When Mary sees Rodriges at a party with another woman, she confronts him and he reveals to her that he is married. Heartbroken, Mary leaves the party and is in a car accident on the way home. When she is released from the hospital after a while, she realizes that she has feelings for Bruno and visits him in her wheelchair. When she meets him in the garden, where he teaches children to paint, the two kiss passionately. Meanwhile, Nora speaks to Edward and admits that she feels something for him. The film ends with family and friends celebrating Nora and Edward's wedding.

The film music comprises a total of 32 tracks. The musical spectrum ranges from California Gurls , Snoop Dogg and Katy Perry to Divertimento No. 17 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart .

reception

The film received rather negative reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 21% of the reviews were positive, out of a total of 19 reviews. The average rating is 4.2 / 10. At Metacritic , the film received a rating of 39 out of 100 points, based on 10 reviews (as of 2014) .

The Hollywood Reporter said From Prada to Nada compares to Clueless - what else! did not stand, and at most offer “ sitcom- like, template-like characters and situations”. The Los Angeles Times wrote that the film had more in common with a "cobbled together television movie than with a conversational piece ."

Awards

Alexa Vega won the award for the most popular film actress in the comedy / musical category at the 12th ALMA Awards . The film was also nominated for Best Picture , but did not win.

The Imagen Awards were Wilmer Valderrama and Adriana Barraza as best actor nominated; Adriana Barraza won the award.
