It was El Salvador's second participation in a World Cup. Against Hungary, the blatant outsider El Salvador suffered the highest World Cup defeat of all time (Yugoslavia defeated Zaire on June 18, 1974 in Gelsenkirchen 9-0 and Hungary and South Korea on June 17, 1954 in Zurich also 9-0, so that both one had the same goal difference). Against World Champion Argentina and Vice-European Champion Belgium the defeats were much smaller.
