The New Zealand national football team at the 1982 World Cup in Spain .
Preliminary round
As in 1974 and 1978, the three Oceanic teams New Zealand, Australia and Fiji competed in the Asia qualification. After the end in 1974 and 1978, the New Zealanders managed to beat arch-rivals Australia in the third attempt and qualify for the final tournament.

Final round
In the final round, the New Zealanders competed against the group winners of the other groups. At the end of the qualification they were in second place with China with the same number of points and goal difference. The second qualifier to Kuwait had to be determined in a playoff. In Singapore they defeated the Chinese 2-1 in front of 60,000 spectators and qualified for the finals in Spain.

In the preliminary round of the 1982 World Cup in Spain, the New Zealand national soccer team met Brazil , the USSR and Scotland in their first World Cup participation in Group 6 . As a clear outsider, all games were clearly lost and you were eliminated from the tournament after the preliminary round.
