Fujioka ( Japanese 藤 岡 市 , -shi ) is a city in Gunma Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .
history
Like all of Gunma Prefecture, Fujioka used to be known for its silk production. The Fujioka silk market is mentioned as early as 1684. Here lived and worked also Takayama Chōgorō , the end of the 19th century, the Japanese sericulture modernized. In 1884 he founded a school and research facility, the Takayama-sha , whose preserved buildings were declared a World Heritage Site in 2016 .
