Mirai Nikki ( Japanese 未来 日記 , German “ Future Diary / Books”), also Future Diary , is a manga series by the Japanese illustrator Sakae Esuno , which was published in Japan from 2006 to 2010. The work is in the genres of action, drama and Shonen classify. It tells the story of the student Yukiteru Amano, who is drawn into a murderous game by God. The aim is simply to survive as the last of the twelve bearers of a diary in which one's own future is prophesied while the participants try to eliminate each other. At the same time, a love story develops between him and the also participating student Yuno Gasai, although she is a psychotic stalker who is in love with him .

The manga series was adapted as an anime television series of the same name in 2011 under the direction of Naoto Hosoda in the animation studio Asread . At the beginning of 2010, Kadokawa Shoten had published Mirai Nikki: 13-nin-me no Nikki Shoyūsha ( 未来 日記 -13 人 目 の 日記 所有者 - ), an adventure game for the PlayStation Portable , which expands the plot to include a thirteenth diary. In addition, a real television series appeared in 2012.

content

At the beginning of the plot, the student Yukiteru Amano introduces his life in a monologue. It turns out that he has great problems making real friendships. Instead, he invests most of the time to keep a diary on his cell phone in which he records the daily events in detail. On arrival at home, he wraps himself under his blanket and regularly enters a parallel world in his fantasy, where he talks to his imaginary friend, the divine Deus Ex Machina, and his very young-looking companion Murmur. In the conversation this god tells Yukiteru that he wants to host a game so that he and his companion would not be so bored. Little did Yukiteru know that this would have far-reaching consequences. Deus Ex Machina gives Yukiteru's diary the ability to predict the future by already making entries there that he would have written later. Because of his way of keeping a diary, the predictions do not affect him directly either.

When he woke up the next morning, he actually found corresponding entries there, which, however, he pays no particular attention to, since he would probably have written them himself while half asleep. As the day progresses, however, it quickly becomes apparent that the entries are true and come exactly as predicted. Deus Ex Machina also gets in touch with him and makes it clear to him that he has been wrong the whole time. It was not he who imagined this parallel world, but Deus Ex Machina came to him and occupied his imagination. In addition, Yukiteru is bound to his diary. That is, if it were to be destroyed or if he lost it, his existence would also end, since it no longer had a future.

In the following days he can convince himself more and more of the entries and begins to use them for his part, by consciously avoiding certain events or taking advantage of them. This is not entirely hidden from his classmates, as he seems to be incredibly lucky. However, they have no idea why this could be. Nevertheless, this worsens his relationship with his classmates, who now find him particularly noticeable. When he was once again perfectly prepared for an unannounced test with which many students had problems, he noticed a look from his classmate Yuno Gasai, who, despite her good reputation , began to knead a figure during the test. When he finally leaves the classroom and takes a closer look at the figure on Yuno's table, however, he is deeply shocked. That one looks exactly like Murmur, and at about the same time his death is announced as DEAD END (“dead end; here also: fatal end”) on his cell phone . Staring at the entry in disbelief, he is caught by Yuno, who tells him that she knows exactly what is causing Yukiteru to flee in panic.

He learns that with him and Yuno a total of 12 people have received a future diary and have to kill each other, whereby the last survivor will succeed Deus as God.

characters

Most of the characters in the work are named after gods from Greco - Roman mythology , in particular the twelve diary owners with one exception (Tsubaki Kasugano) after the Dei Consentes .

Yukiteru Amano ( 天野 雪 輝 , Amano Yukiteru , 1st)
Speaker: Misuzu Togashi
Yukiteru is the male protagonist of the series and a 14-year-old student. He has little contact with his classmates, but instead keeps a diary with his cell phone. When he is chosen by Deus to keep his diary, he receives the observer's diary ( 無差別 日記 , musabetsu nikki , dt. "Indiscriminate diary"), which shows in detail events that will happen around him from his perspective, but not what exactly to him happens. In combination with Yuno's diary, however, this weakness is compensated for. At first, Yukiteru just tries to survive the game without harming anyone, but gets actively involved after the death of both of his parents. He is supported by Yuno, who saves his life several times, for which he is very grateful to her, but at the same time scared off by her obsessive love for him, whereby she also walks over corpses.
It is named after the Roman god Jupiter , where ama no means "heavenly" and Yukiteru rhymes with Jupiter (Japanese Yupiteru ) in Japanese . Likewise, the names of his parents Rea ( 礼 亜 ) and Kurō ( 九郎 ) are borrowed from the parents of Zeus , as the Greek counterparts of Jupiter, Rhea and Chronos (Japanese Kuronosu ).
Yuno Gasai ( 我 妻 由 乃 , Gasai Yuno , 2nd)
Speaker: Tomosa Murata
Yuno is Yukiteru's classmate. She is considered attractive, intelligent and model student at school. In fact, as a Yandere , she is obsessively in love with Yukiteru - whom she calls Yukki ( ユ ッ キ ー , Yukkī ) -, secretly pursues him, is jealous of any girl who gets too close, and does not hesitate to kill anyone who wants to hurt Yukiteru. Her obsessiveness is expressed in the fact that her Yukiteru diary ( 雪 輝 日記 , Yukiteru nikki ) provides information every 10 minutes about what Yukiteru is doing. It is the perfect complement to Yukiteru's diary. She is also skilled at handling knives and firearms. Their behavior can be traced back to their parents, who wanted to make their daughter the perfect student, and in doing so made increasing demands on her, which eventually degenerated into that she dictated her entire daily routine and locked it in a cage. This in turn drove Yuno insane.
Yuno is named after Jupiter's wife and goddess of marriage Juno , where Gasai means "my wife".
Takao Hiyama ( 火山 高夫 , Hiyama Takao , 3rd)
Speaker: Jin Domon

In order to win the loyalty of the cult disciples for himself, he installed Tsubaki as the new leader and locked her in a cage, where she is regularly raped by her disciples. Her “clairvoyance diary” ( 千里眼 日記 , senri nikki ) records everything that every cult disciple sees, although the disadvantage besides her bad eyes is that her diary is a long scroll. Due to her traumatic experiences, however, she does not trust her disciples and the entries and only wants to become God in order to end the world.
