Günther Popp

Günther Popp (born January 31, 1921 in Greiz ; † December 28, 2016 ) was a German dentist and general practitioner in the Bundeswehr .

Life

Günther Popp began his military career after completing his Abitur as an officer candidate (OA) in the Navy . He received his training on several German ships. Günther Popp held the rank of lieutenant at sea at the end of the war in 1945 . He then came into British captivity .

After his release, Günther Popp completed a degree in dentistry in Würzburg . In 1950 he passed the state examination in Würzburg. Günther Popp also received his doctorate in Würzburg in 1950 with a thesis on mouth and gum infections from foreign literature from 1940-1950 . His first professional positions after studying and doing his doctorate were as an assistant in practices and dental clinics of the US armed forces .

In 1958 he joined the Bundeswehr as a medical officer . It did not take long before Günther Popp became head of the Schleswig dental station. He then acted as an assistant in the dental department of the Sanitary and Health Inspection (InSan) in the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) in Bonn . Günther Popp worked there for several years building up a dental service for the German Armed Forces. From May 1964 to 1972 he took on the position of head of the dental station in Regensburg as senior staff doctor . In 1967 Günther Popp was promoted to senior field doctor. Soon afterwards he was a division dentist in the 4th Jäger Division .

From October 1972 Günther Popp acted as Chief Dentist of the Army in the Army Office (HA) in Cologne . His area of ​​responsibility included laying the foundations for dental service in the army. The resulting structures for the dental care of the soldiers in the army lasted until the early 1980s, which was an indication of their quality.

The high point of his military career was his promotion to general physician and his appointment as stage manager dentistry of the Bundeswehr (InspizZahnMedBw) in October 1975. Günther Popp's goals included the material equipment of the treatment facilities at the state of the art and a dental treatment of the soldiers at the highest level.

Until his retirement in 1981, Günther Popp was a representative of the dental service of the German Armed Forces in the national and international military and civilian areas. He had great success and enjoyed high recognition. In 1979, Günther Popp received the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class) as an award for this reason .

He was also deputy chairman of the Military Commission (SDFDS) of the Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI).
