Léon Spahn, better known as Gabriel Spahn (born December 25, 1930 in Walscheid ( Mosel ); † February 11, 2017 in Niderviller (Mosel)), was an activist in the international club and sports milieu. In his youth he joined the local clubs, where his sports career brought him up to the club manager.

Life

On March 22, 1946, Spahn received his first club license from the Fédération gymnastique et sportive des patronages de France (FGSPF) through the patronage of La Montagnarde de Waldscheid , where he practiced athletics . In 1947, he began a supplementary course and followed distance learning, which he owed his legal skills in 1959. In 1951 he completed his military service in the 6th Logistics Regiment in Moulins-lès-Metz . Since 1952 he has used his talent for languages, especially French and German, for translations. In 1953, just 10 years after the Franco-German Elysée Treaty had been signed, he took the initiative to organize the first sports meeting between Lorraine and Germany.

He married Marthe Kribs. This marriage had three sons. After the death of his wife on May 13, 2012, he gradually gave up his various functions and died on February 11, 2017. His funeral was celebrated on February 14, 2017 in his native village, accompanied by a large crowd and a funeral procession of fifteen Flags that preceded the local and regional dignitaries and a delegation of representatives from Fédération sportive et culturelle de France (FSCF) accompanied by the Fédération internationale catholique d'éducation physique et sportive (FICEP). At his funeral he was given a speech of honor by the Moselle department of the Association nationale des membres de l ' Ordre national du mérite (ANMONM).

Civil obligations

He was elected to the city council of Waldscheid in 1959 at the age of 29 and became its mayor for 12 years in 1989 before being appointed honorary mayor in 2003.

In 2003 he became a member of the Association entraide et solidarité en vallée de la Bièvre .

Career

He was an official of the Ministry of Infrastructure and worked there as a technical body; from 1953 to 1968 he was assigned to the service of the air bases of the Organization du traité de l'Atlantique Nord (OTAN / NATO ).

He was a correspondent for Le Républicain Lorrain for over 50 years .

Club obligations

In 2009 he became Vice President of the Mosel football district.

Union Jeanne la Lorraine

Between 1948 and 1960 he was secretary of Union Jeanne-la-Lorraine (UJLL) - comité départemental FSCF de Moselle - and then its president for 52 years until he relinquished the reins in 2012, “proud that his committee augmented the legacy of his predecessors to have. ”He was made Honorary President and Philippe Jullien, President of the League of Lorraine (FSCF), awarded him the gold medal of the Comité Régional Olympique de Lorraine .

FSCF

From 1958 he joined the national bodies of the fédération sportive et culturelle de France ( FSCF ) by becoming a member of the Football Commission, and in 1971 the Vice-President. In 1961 he became a member of the Federal Shooting and Military Training Commission.

Between 1971 and 2004 he was a member of the Directors' Committee and then Honorary Secretary General.

FICEP

In 1954, Gabriel Spahn started at FICEP as a translator on the suggestion of Robert Pringarbe, and he subsequently became President of the Youth Commission. Between 1972 and 2005 he took over the role of the official translator of FICEP from Willy Schanne, first in the framework of the youth commission and then for the committee and the office, where he often took on the three previously mentioned roles in succession. He was the head of the French delegation in the FICEP youth camp for more than 20 years in a row and between 1978 and 1998, under the banner of Office franco-allemand pour la jeunesse (OFAJ), he organized the courses to merge the FSCF bodies (associations and associations of the district), organizes sports exchanges between France and Germany. His wife Marthe was also an interpreter for the sports commission for 12 years.

In 1994 he was part of the official delegation received by the Vatican at the 57th FICEP Assembly, and on that occasion had John Paul II sign the Golden Book .

Awards

Gabriel Spahn was awarded the following honors:

  • Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1994 and officer in 2013. The medal was presented to him on July 14, 2013 in Sarrebourg by Lieutenant General Eugène Audren, President of the Society of Members of the Legion of Honor (SMLH);
  • Gold Medal of Youth and Sports in 1982;
  • Gold medal from the Lorraine Regional Olympic Committee.
