Gary Rhodes OBE (* 22. April 1960 in London , † 26. November 2019 in Dubai ) was a British star and TV chef , nonfiction - author , restaurateur and entrepreneur .

Life

After his birth in London, his family moved to Gillingham , where he attended the Howard School for Boys . Then Rhodes completed a gastronomic training at the vocational school in Thanet , where he also met his future wife Jennie.

He had his first job at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam , and then toured Europe . After various occupations he returned to Great Britain, was Sous Chef at the Reform Club on London's Pall Mall and then at the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge.

He became known in Great Britain for his penchant for English cuisine , his signature hairstyle at the time, and the use of butter and mustard in many of his recipes. He has hosted BBC shows such as Masterchef , Hell's Kitchen and his series Rhodes Around Britain . In 2006 he represented southern England on the BBC at the Great British Menu , but lost to Atul Kochhar . Other series with Gary Rhodes included Saturday Cooks on ITV 1 and Local Food Heroes on UKTV Food . He sold his own line of cookware and ready-to-use mixes for bread .

Rhodes was named Officer of the British Empire (OBE) on June 17, 2006 . He had two children with his wife Jennie, also a cook, and last lived with her in Dubai , where he opened the steakhouse restaurant Rhodes Twenty10 in 2007 .

He died of a cerebral haemorrhage on November 26, 2019 .

Services

Rhodes was the chef of the prestigious Castle Hotel in Taunton in the county of Somerset . At the age of 26, he retained the hotel's Michelin Guide for English cuisine.

In 1990 Rhodes returned to London with his family to become head chef at the Greenhouse Restaurant in Mayfair . The restaurant became famous when Rhodes revived traditional English cuisine . For example, fagot ( meatballs ), fish cake, braised oxtail and bread and butter pudding (a kind of poor knight ). It was awarded one star by the Michelin Guide in 1996.

In 1997 he opened his first restaurant, City Rhodes , and in 1997 Rhodes in the Square - both with a contract with Sodexo . They joined the brasseries of Rhodes and Co in Manchester , Edinburgh and Crawley expanded.

His first television appearance was at the age of 27, with the assistance of Glynn Christian, on Hot Chefs . This was followed by Rhodes Around Britain and Gary's Perfect Christmas , after which his first book was published.
