The “GdP Star” has been a prize that has been awarded annually since 1988 by the Kassel district group of the Police Union (GdP). It honors personalities who stand up for the interests of police employees or who highlight police work in a particularly authentic and positive way. While in the first few years it was primarily Hessian politicians and journalists, in the last two decades it was above all actresses and authors who received awards. The award is now of national importance and is noticed by the media. The winners include a. Hans Eichel (1993), Iris Berben (2000), Evelyn Hamann (2005), Ulrike Folkerts (2009), Rudi Cerne (2010) and Nele Neuhaus (2016).

The early years

In 1987 Hilmar Lorenz and Hans-Jürgen Lipinski came up with the idea of ​​the Kassel district group of the Police Union (GdP) , one of the largest district groups in Germany, to offer a prize to people as a link between the media, politics and the GdP is awarded who are particularly committed to the interests of police workers or who stand out in a particularly authentic and positive way through the depiction of police work. The award was named "GdP star" and consisted of a hand-turned wooden disc with a GdP star symbol and an engraved coat of arms.

First of all, the award went to journalists who had reported positively on the union's activities. Later politicians were also included in the ranks of those honored who had specifically committed themselves to the interests of the police officers. The first prize winner in 1987 was Jörg Steinbach, editor of the “Hessisch Niedersächsische Allgemeine” (HNA) Kassel. As early as 1989, they dared to step out of the region and honored Jürgen Scherzer, an editor of “ Der Spiegel ” (Hamburg).

In 1991 the then Hessian Interior Minister Herbert Günther (SPD) was the first politician to receive the award.

An actor was honored for the first time in 1995. It was Jürgen Heinrich for the realistic depiction of the chief detective Andreas Wolff in the SAT 1 program " Wolff's Revier ". In 1996, the actor Stefan Kurt followed, for his main role as the undercover agent in the Dieter Wedel ZDF multi-part series " The Shadow Man ".

A specialty was the 1998 award. Gerhard Bökel (SPD) received the award as Hessian interior minister together with the chairman of the “Police Union” (GdP) Hesse, Hermann Lutz , for the introduction of the so-called “two-part career” with studies for the Police in Hessen. In 2002, the honor went to a police colleague David Morales from the New York Police Department, who had been a first responder in the attack on the “World Trade Center” on September 11, 2001 and who saved lives.

Increasing importance

Norbert Birnbach and Volker Zeidler shaped the design of the award until 2012. In 2004, Jürgen Tomicek , a cartoonist and police officer, received the award. In 2009 a native actress from Kassel was honored. Ulrike Folkerts convinced the jury as a television commissioner. For 20 years she played the role of "Lena Odenthal" on ARD Tatort. With her, the role of women in the police was clearly shown positively, found the district group of the GdP in its justification.

The award ceremony is meanwhile being noticed and followed in the media nationwide. In 2012 a book author was honored for the first time. Peter Jamin had dealt with the subject of violence against police officers in his book "Abgeknallt". Peter Jamin made demands of the judges and the public prosecutor's office to support the police officers in their heavy work. For this he was honored with the GdP star.

Glass sculpture is created

The award and its award were redesigned in 2015 on the initiative of Stefan Rüppel (district group chairman GdP-Nordhessen) and Lars Elsebach (chairman GdP district group) and now consists of a glass sculpture. Henning Baum was the first to receive the redesigned prize for his portrayal in the series “The Last Bull”.

The location of the award ceremony changes

The 2017 award ceremony took place for the first time in the Baunatal town hall and was moderated for the first time by a moderator, Marcus Leitschuh . For 2016, Nele Neuhaus was honored there, who values ​​realistic depiction of everyday police life in her Taunus crime novels around the investigator figure Oliver von Bodenstein of the Hofheim am Taunus police department. Sebastian Pufpaff was the first cabaret artist to receive the award. After New Year's Eve 2015/2016 in Cologne, he publicly thanked the police for their work on the 25th program “ Pufpaffs Happy Hour ” (3Sat).

Julian Reichelt , editor-in-chief of the "Bild" newspaper , received an award for 2018. He had launched a fundraising campaign for police officers injured at the G20 summit. You could use the money to make short breaks possible. The two chief reports Claudia Weingärtner and Frank Schneider accepted the award.

For 2019, Max Müller was honored in his role as Michi Mohr in the ZDF television series “ The Rosenheim Cops ”.
