The Geisslibach is an approximately 12 kilometer long tributary of the Rhine in the Swiss cantons of Thurgau and Zurich . It drains an area of around 48 km² in the Zurich wine region and in the Frauenfeld district of Thurgau .

course

The stream rises nameless and overturned at 478  m above sea level. M. in a shallow hollow in the Tägermoos corridor , a former wetland, on the Tägerbüül hill ( 492  m above sea level ). The source is a little east of Oberneunforn and a little west of Wilen . The stream initially flows underground to the northeast past the Lindenhof before it first comes to the surface in the wooded foxhole . At the same time it forms a small ravine, where it has dug itself into two drumlins . At the end of the ravine, after about 700 meters of the stream, it crosses the border to the canton of Zurich and is initially called the Felderengraben . Immediately after the border it feeds a small pond, after which it is overtaken at the edge of the forest.

The stream is directed to the north-northwest, past the Felderhof and Unterbuch and is now called Mülibach . In front of the railway embankment in the hallway Heerenweg flows of him also eingedolte Buewisgraben to left. It passes Waltalingen in the east and reappears from the left at the confluence of the Dorfbach Waltalingen . It flows canalised mainly to the north past Rietmüli , Guntalingen and Girsberg Castle , taking in the Chrummbach from the right and the Guntalingen from the left . At the Furtmühle between the Drumlins Furtmülibuck and Staagbüel , it crosses the border to the canton of Thurgau, where it is now called Geisslibach. Shortly before Schlattingen it takes up the Furtbach from the right and bends to the northwest. It flows through Schlattingen and Basadingen , where the Chatzebach joins on the left.

The Geisslibach passes the Drumlin Eichbühl and shortly afterwards it reaches Willisdorf , where it curves to the northeast. Shortly after the Rottmühle , a mill canal branches off to the left , which flows back to the stream at the Mittlere Mühle . The brook flows through Diessenhofen and finally flows out at 392  m above sea level. M. directly at Unterhof Castle from the left into the Upper Rhine . The estuary is also used as a boat harbor.

Renaturation measures

In the years 2007 to 2010, extensive renaturation measures were implemented on the lower reaches between Willisdorf and the mouth of the Rhine. The aim was to improve the living conditions for fish in the Geisslibach. The Geisslibach is to serve as a nursery for young fish in the future. In addition, in hot summer, when the Rhine water rises above 24 degrees, the fish should be able to retreat to the cooler Geisslibach. For this purpose, a 2 meter high rapids near Willisdorf were replaced by fish-accessible steps and the course of the stream adapted. In addition, an 18-meter-long dam made of 350 tons of natural stone was built at the mouth of the Rhine. It protects the boat harbor and the fish that live in it from the negative effects of the waves of the Rhine. In addition, it prevents the cold stream water from mixing quickly with the warmer Rhine water. Today the Geisslibach is again rich in fish in the lower section from Willisdorf, with trout and grayling in particular.
