The community school Lauda-Königshofen is a community school with elementary school and secondary level in Lauda in the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg . The history of the school and its predecessor institutions (former elementary school , later elementary and secondary school as well as elementary and technical secondary school ) in the partly listed school buildings in the center of Lauda goes back over 100 years.

history

Origins of the Lauda elementary school

On April 15, 1912, the new construction of the now listed old building of the Lauda elementary school in Philipp-Adam-Ulrich-Strasse 2 began, which was inaugurated on April 6, 1913. Lessons could begin on April 7, 1913. The Lauda primary school was run by the so-called local school authority.

The takeover of power by the National Socialists also had an effect on the school in Lauda, as the relatively free-liberal basic attitude of school policy at the time was increasingly confronted with the strictly structured rules of the “General German Elementary School” and the National Socialist content.

Start of secondary school

First extension with the former public bath , built in 1949
Second extension, built from 1967

From autumn 1942, the secondary school was introduced in Baden . In addition to Wertheim, Lauda had been chosen as the location by the Minister for Culture and Education. From then on, the secondary school built on the fourth grade of the elementary school and was also designed for four school years. The school name was changed to Primary and Secondary School Lauda , from the 1960s to Primary and Secondary School Lauda . At that time, English was already being taught in the secondary school and a broad general education aimed at, which should be suitable for technical and economic professions as well as for the upper class.

The last testimonies before the end of World War II were distributed on July 27, 1944. After that, classes were temporarily canceled and in March 1945 the staff of a flak regiment was billeted at the school. After the Second World War, the schoolhouse was initially confiscated by the American military government and Red Cross soldiers moved into the building. Lessons were only resumed in autumn 1945, but not in the primary school building, but in an old school building in the city, which was opposite the Stern Gasthof. In 1947 the Americans reopened the school building for teaching.

An extension to the old school building with a public swimming pool was started in 1949. The indoor swimming pool was open to the public every Friday and Saturday, but emphasis was placed on segregating the sexes : women and children were allowed to swim on Friday and men on Saturday. With the decision of the municipal council of March 8, 1954 to set up a 5th, 6th and 7th advanced class in the elementary school, which should later be extended by a 9th and 10th advanced class if there was enough interest, the foundation stone for the later the city's Josef-Schmitt-Realschule.

The public bath of the school in the extension had to close again in 1959. In its place there is now an engine room and a storage room for technical lessons. In 1964 it was decided to build a school gym and from 1967 to 1969 another building was built on the school grounds for the secondary school. After the secondary school later moved to its own location, these rooms became available for the secondary school, which was also growing in the 1960s.

The previously independent class 5 of the communities of Heckfeld and Oberlauda were assigned to the Lauda secondary school on August 1, 1968. The 8th and 9th grades from Heckfeld, Oberlauda and Gerlachsheim had already been held in Lauda since December 9, 1966.

Upgrade of the Hauptschule to a Werkrealschule

In the 1983/84 school year, the final examination was introduced across the board in the secondary schools with the aim of upgrading the secondary school leaving certificate by providing an objective proof of performance. The first school PCs were introduced in the same school year . At the end of the 1986/87 school year, the first secondary school students were able to achieve an intermediate level education according to the “9 + 3” model. These attempts to upgrade the Hauptschule finally resulted in the Werkrealschule school experiment in the 1980s . The school name changed from then on to elementary and secondary school with Werkrealschule .

The school-free Saturday was introduced in Lauda from the 1992/93 school year - despite various concerns. In 1993, on the other hand, additional lessons began in the 10th grade of the secondary school. Also in 1993, the school launched “core time care”, a forerunner of all-day care. A sponsorship association for the school was set up in 1998.

All-day operation of the Werkrealschule

New construction of the administration building with cafeteria and lounge, built from 2007

In 2000, the Lauda-Königshofen town council decided to apply to the state of Baden-Württemberg to set up an all-day school . After a successful establishment decree by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport , the school switched to full-day operation in the elementary and technical secondary school in 2003. Based on previous space requirements planning, this required, among other things, a new construction of the central wing with an attached cafeteria from 2007 . From 2011 the school was called Grund- und Werkrealschule Lauda .

From May 9th to 11th, 2012, the school celebrated its 100th anniversary with a variety of activities and projects based on the school motto “Learning, Living, Future”.

Establishment of the community school

For the 2014/15 school year, the Lauda primary and secondary school was selected as one of only a few schools in the Main-Tauber district to start running community schools . The school was now called the Lauda Community School .

In the so-called external evaluation by the State Institute for School Development , the community school in Lauda-Königshofen was able to draw attention to itself in 2017: With 47 fulfilled out of 48 checked criteria, the community school achieved the grade 1+. This makes the school one of the few top educational institutions of all the schools in Baden-Württemberg that were examined, as such high ratings are extremely rare.

Changes in the urban school landscape

Plans of the city administration of Lauda-Königshofen, which became known in 2017, to merge all secondary schools from grade 5 (community school, Martin-Schleyer -Gymnasium and Josef-Schmitt -Realschule) on a common campus were approved in June 2018 by the "Steering Committee for School Development" rejected by the municipal council. Instead, as part of the urban school development planning, the latter decided to leave the community school at the location in the city center. Only the all-day elementary school will move to the school center on Becksteiner Straße in the future.

School grounds in the city center

The old school building (former elementary school; today's community school), the primary school building, the gymnasium and the new building with administration building and canteen are located next to each other in downtown Lauda. The old building from 1912 is a listed building . It is a plastered building with a hipped mansard roof in a corner position, roof turrets and a central dwarf house. In addition, the building has a portal with a canopy and relief decoration.

The old building is being renovated since autumn 2017 for three million euros in various stages: at the exterior renovation facade renovation is with its natural stone - cornices and jewelery ornaments in the foreground. In addition, damage to the dormers, gables and branch towers of the attic will be repaired. For monument protection reasons, the windows may not be replaced. For this reason, an additional window level behind the original windows is attached to the glazing and window areas where monument protection reasons make it necessary, so that they remain visible to the outside. The school ensemble is framed by numerous monuments, for example the steam lock monument opposite the gym, St. Mary's Church and the Way of the Cross in the cemetery wall on the outer wall or at the back of the administration building.
