Eugene "Gene" FitzGerald ( Irish Eoghan Mac Gearailt , born August 21, 1932 , † December 14, 2007 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil and sat from 1972 to 1987 in the Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament .

biography

FitzGerald was elected to the 19th Dáil Éireann for his party in a by-election on August 2, 1972 . He was appointed by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch on July 5, 1977 to the Fianna Fáil government led by the latter as Minister of Labor and held this office under Lynch's successor, Charles Haughey, until December 16, 1980. On March 24, 1980 he was also Minister for the Public Service. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he took over the post of finance minister instead of the labor ministry on December 16, 1980 . After the Fianna Fáil's electoral defeat, he resigned from the government on June 30, 1981 as Minister of Finance and Minister of Public Service.

After the defeat of the Fine Gael government under Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald , Charles Haughey reappointed him in his government. There he was again Minister of Labor and Minister for the Public Service between March 9 and December 14, 1982. In the 1987 elections for the 25th Dáil Éireann, he decided not to run again and thus left the House of Commons. In addition to his parliamentary activities, FitzGerald also sat in the European Parliament from 1984 to 1994 . Such a dual mandate was still possible at that time.
