Career

Kowaljow started boxing as a teenager, he's a southpaw with a very strong left flapping hand. As a junior he was already a Russian champion and made his international debut in 2001 when he won a well-staffed junior tournament in Alghero / Italy with a points win in the final over Zbigniew Kolacz from Poland in the bantamweight division.

At a height of 1.71 m, he started in the next few years with the seniors in the bantam weight, the weight class up to 54 kg body weight. In 2002 he was the first Russian senior champion. In the final of the bantamweight he defeated Bata-Munka Wankejeu on points. In the same year he also started at the European Senior Championships in Perm . In the bantamweight he reached the final fight, in which he was defeated, however, against Kawazi Khatsygow from Belarus . But winning the European runner-up was a great success for him.

2003 Kowaljow was again Russian champion in bantamweight. He won the final battle over Maksim Chalikov. The next high point in Gennady's career was the 2003 World Championships in Bangkok . He won there over Berik Serikbajew from Kazakhstan (21: 6), Zsolt Bedák from Hungary (43:20), Kawazi Khatsygow (25:14) and Bahodirjon Sultanow from Uzbekistan (21:15) each clearly on points. In the final battle he faced Ağası Məmmədov from Azerbaijan , against whom he lost on points (8:17). He was runner-up in 2003.

Because of the preparation for the 2004 European Championship in Pula and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , he was absent from the Russian Championship this year. In Pula he safely reached the final, in which he defeated Ali Habbab from France on points and thus became European champion . At the Olympic Games in Athens, after defeating Malik Bouziane from Algeria , he met Guillermo Rigondeaux from Cuba , who dominated the bantamweight division at the time , against whom he clearly lost on points (5:20) in the quarter-finals . Rigondeaux became Olympic champion and Kowaljew took 5th place together with three other boxers.

After the Olympics, he had to take a longer injury break. He could not train at all for several months and put on weight considerably. After his recovery, he therefore decided to box in the light welterweight division, i.e. three weight classes higher than before.
