The 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary turned out to be a great moment in her career. Although van Gennip had injured his foot two months before the start of the games and had to undergo an operation, she prevailed in three Olympic finals against tough competition from the GDR . In doing so, she broke several records: She improved the world record by almost 5 seconds over 3,000 meters, undercut her personal best by almost 4 seconds over 1,500 meters, and in the end she was almost 7 seconds faster than her own world record over 5,000 meters. With three gold medals, van Gennip was the most successful athlete at the Winter Games, on par with the Finnish ski jumper Matti Nykänen . When she returned to her hometown, she was met by 60,000 people.

Four years later, at the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville , van Gennip was no longer able to build on these brilliant successes. Her only result was a sixth place over 3,000 meters.
