Geordie S. Kinnear (* 9. July 1973 in Simcoe , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and current - trainer , who during his playing career between 1990 and 2000 among other four games for the Atlanta Thrashers in the National Hockey League on the Has contested the position of the defender . Mainly, however, Kinnear played in the American Hockey League with the Albany River Rats , with whom he won the Calder Cup in 1995 . Since the beginning of the 2016/17 season he has been the head coach of the Springfield Thunderbirds from the AHL.

Career

Player career

Kinnear spent his junior years between 1990 and 1993 in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes . With the team, the defender won the J. Ross Robertson Cup in 1993 . In the previous year he was selected as part of the NHL Entry Draft in 1992 in the seventh round in 162nd place by the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League .

In the summer of 1993, Kinnear finally moved into the professional field after signing a contract in the Devils franchise . He stayed with the organization for a total of six years, but during this period he played exclusively in the American Hockey League for New Jersey's farm team , the Albany River Rats . There he came to a total of 438 missions and was a member of the team that won the Calder Cup in the 1994/95 season . He also received invitations to the AHL All-Star Classic in 1996 and 1998 and was team captain of the River Rats for three years .

In the summer of 1999 - his contract in New Jersey had expired - the defender switched to the newly founded Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent , where he made his NHL debut during the 1999/2000 season and was on the ice a total of four times. But mainly he was used in the International Hockey League for the Orlando Solar Bears . So also at the beginning of the following game year, at the beginning of which he was transferred back to the New Jersey Devils in November 2000. After he had completed another 14 missions for the Albany River Rats in the AHL by the end of December 2000, he announced his retirement from active sport shortly before the turn of the year at the age of 27.

Coaching career

Just over a year after retiring , Kinnear returned to the Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League , where he was henceforth an assistant coach. There he first worked under head coach Bobby Carpenter ; in the following years until the end of the 2009/10 season under Dennis Gendron , Robbie Ftorek , Tom Rowe and Jeff Daniels . In addition, he was used in the 2004/05 season as a scout for the cooperation partner New Jersey Devils .

From the summer of 2010, the former player paused for two years in order to work again as an assistant coach in the AHL at the beginning of the 2012/13 season . He worked for the Charlotte Checkers for the next four years . The first three seasons of it with Jeff Daniels, who had also been his boss in Albany. In the fourth year he supported the new head coach Mark Morris in his work. Before the start of the 2016/17 season , Kinnear was hired as the first head coach of the newly formed Springfield Thunderbirds from the AHL.
