Georg Buschan

Georg Buschan (born April 14, 1863 in Frankfurt (Oder) ; † November 6, 1942 in Stettin ) was a German physician , ethnologist and ethnographer .

Life

During his studies in 1884 he became a member of the Raczek fraternity in Breslau . He earned his doctorate at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Breslau for Dr. med. and at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich as Dr. phil.

After completing his studies, he worked as a naval doctor, most recently as a marine senior physician . Between 1911 and 1926 he toured the Balkan Peninsula , Africa and East Asia . He traveled extensively in German Cameroon . As a doctor he settled in Szczecin. He held the title of medical councilor .

With his numerous works he aroused the interest of a wide audience in ethnological questions. Buschan was the founder and editor of the Centralblatt magazine for anthropology, ethnology and prehistory , co-editor of the Ethnological Gazette and was temporarily chairman of the Society for Ethnology and Geography.

Illustrated ethnology

His main work, the Illustrierte Völkerkunde (3 volumes, 1910–1926) , which was created with the collaboration of numerous specialist representatives - Felix von Luschan , Robert Heine-Geldern , Richard Lasch , Walter Krickeberg , Arthur Haberlandt , Arthur Byhan , Wilhelm Volz , Michael Haberlandt , was considered the most important overall scientific presentation of the subject in its time.

The customs of the peoples

His work on the customs of peoples , which treats "love, marriage, marriage, birth, religion, superstition, habits, cultural peculiarities, death and burials among all peoples of the earth" on the basis of the contributions of outstanding scholars, was also widespread.
