Georg Nicolaus Knauer

Georg Nicolaus Knauer (born February 26, 1926 in Hamburg ; † October 28, 2018 in Haverford, Pennsylvania ) was a German-American classical philologist .

Life

Georg Nicolaus Knauer studied classical philology at the University of Hamburg and was established in 1952 with a thesis on Psalm quotations in Augustine's Confessions doctorate , in 1955 in Göttingen Publisher Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht appeared. He achieved his habilitation in 1961 at the Free University of Berlin with the text The Aeneis and Homer . Studies on Virgil's poetic technique with lists of Homer quotations in the Aeneid , which appeared in 1964 in the series Hypomnemata (No. 7). In 1979 the font was published for the second time.

Knauer was made an associate professor at the Free University of Berlin in 1964 and, after a stay as a visiting professor at Yale University, was made a personal professor from 1965 to 1966. In 1969 he was a Nelly Wallace Lecturer at Oxford University , and from 1973 to 1974 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (New Jersey) . In 1975 he followed a call to the University of Pennsylvania as Professor of Classics , where he has been active in teaching and research ever since. In 1978, 1980–1982 and 1985–1988 he was chairman of the Department of Classics . Visiting professorships and research stays took him to various other universities and research institutions: in 1978 he was visiting professor at the University of Columbia , 1979 Guggenheim Fellow , 1984 Fellow of the National Endowment of the Humanities, 1985 Resident in Classics at the American Academy in Rome , 1989 Resident of the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio , 1991 and 2002 visiting researcher at the Herzog August Library Wolfenbüttel .

Knauer was one of the leading experts on the reception of Homer and Virgil in ancient and medieval literature as well as in the Renaissance . He has also written numerous essays on Augustine of Hippo and articles for the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae . Knauer's estate is owned by the Hoover Institution at Stanford University . It contains documents from Knauer's time at the Free University of Berlin.

Knauer had been with Elfriede Regina born in 1951 . Overhoff (1926-2010) married.
