The Georgenberg is a mountain in the Tennengau of the State of Salzburg in the area of the municipality of Kuchl or the cadastral municipality of Georgenberg . The mountain is about 910 m long, between 113 and 281 m wide and at its highest point 528  m high. It towers above the Salzach Valley by around 59 m. Its plateau covers 15 hectares. It is designated as a natural monument of the State of Salzburg ( list entry ) and in 2019 housed the largest bald ibis colony in Europe.

Geology of the Georgenberg

The Georgenberg was created 400,000 years ago after the Salzach Glacier melted away. This created a lake that took up the entire Salzburg basin . Debris from the Osterhorn group was entered into this, which partially filled the lake again, whereby the deposited sediments solidified into gravel bodies. Due to the glacier movements of the Riss and Mindel glacial periods, this gravel filling in the Salzach Valley was partially removed again. However, under the protection of some spurs from the basement, some mountains of sediment remained, e.g. B. the Mönchsberg , the Rainberg or the Hellbrunner Berg and the Morzger Hügel as well as the Georgenberg exist. The Georgenberg extends along the direction of movement of the former Salzach Glacier in a north-west-south-east direction.

The pebbles of the conglomerate of the Georgenberg are well cemented together nut- to fist-sized rocks from the upper reaches of the Salzach. The main mass consists of limestone and dolomite stones, alongside marl and silicate stones , green slate , quartzite and sandstones .

History

The Georgenberg has always been a preferred settlement area as a conglomerate elevation that is difficult to conquer. Settlement is assumed as early as the early and late Neolithic . Permanent settlement is only guaranteed in the early Bronze Age . Since then, the mountain has been used in Roman times, the Middle Ages and the present. 15 BC The Salzburg area was incorporated into the Roman Empire. The town of Cucullis (Kuchl) , which has not yet been reliably located, is shown as a post office or rest stop on a Roman road map, the Tabula Peutingeriana , and was possibly at the Georgenberg. Many finds (bronze bracelets, fibulae) on the Georgenberg have been secured from Roman times. In the area of St. George's Church on Georgenberg , the remains of a Roman building were also uncovered.

Between 470 and 475 AD, Saint Severin stayed in the province of Salzburg, and his visit to two Salzburg locations was recorded in his biography, the Vita Sancti Severini . It is assumed that the Castellum Cucullis mentioned by Severin was on the Georgenberg and that the late antique church building on the Georgenberg, dating from around AD 400, is the church that Severin had entered twice.
