Georgi Nikolayevich Danelija ( Russian Георгий Николаевич Данелия Georgi Nikolayevich Danelija ; Georgian გიორგი დანელია Giorgi Danelia , * 25. August 1930 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR , Soviet Union , † 4. April 2019 in Moscow ) was a Soviet and Russian film director and screenwriter of Georgian nationality .

Life

The father, Nikolai Dmitrijewitsch Danelija (1902-1981), a railroad engineer, was a foreman, boss of a mine, chief engineer in underground construction in Moscow and the USSR. The mother Meri Iwlianowna Andschaparidze (1905-1980), she came from the Megrel nobility, worked as an assistant and second director at Mosfilm . She made several short films. Her sister Weriko Andschaparidze was a well-known Soviet actress.

Georgi Danelija's wife, the director Galina Ivanovna Jurkowa-Danelija, made the films "Franzus" (The French), "Boschja Twar '" (God's creature) and also the short films "Schutka" (The Joke) and "Tekuschtschij Den'" ( Today). Nikolai Danelija (1959–1985), son from his marriage to the actress Lyubow Sokolowa , was a director, poet, artist; the daughter Swetlana is a lawyer; the son of Kirill artist.

In 1955 Danelija graduated from the Moscow Architecture Institute . In 1956 he attended higher courses in directing. Danelija's first film "Serjoscha" (together with Igor Talankin ) attracted the attention of critics and the public. The film Stopover in Moscow ( Russian: Ja schagaju po Moskwe I walk through Moscow , 1964), a cultural event of Khrushchev's thaw , became one of Danelia's programmatic works .

Beginning with the work “Tridzat 'tri” (Thirty-three, 1966), the director turned to satire , he became a recognized master of comedy. Danelija's work is characterized by truly profound satire, well thought-out grotesque, a fragile lyrical tone and the uncovering of the psychological patterns of his heroes. The ability to put together a coordinated ensemble of actors from different schools is a special gift of Danelija as a director.

1967-1970 he wrote some miniatures for the satirical magazine "Fitil '". Danelija films like “Afonja”, “Mimino”, “Osennij Marafon” (autumn marathon) and “ Kin-dsa-dsa! “One whose remake is Ku! Kin-dsa-dsa was made as a cartoon in 2013 under his direction. In the 80s he was invited to the jury of the higher league of the KWN .

His hobbies were painting, graphics and music. He also owned a collection of drums. His favorite directors were Fellini (especially the film Eight and Half ), Juri German and Nikita Michalkow .

Georgi Danelija lived and worked in Moscow until his death on April 4, 2019.

Danelija was honored as Honored Worker of the Arts of the RSFSR in 1965, as a People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1974 and as a People's Artist of the USSR in 1989 (1989). In 1978 he received the State Prize of the USSR , in 1997 the State Prize of the Russian Federation . The Russian President awarded him a prize for his contributions to the development of cinematography .

Trivia

  • Danelija is a cousin of the actress Sopiko Tschiaureli , whom he only cast once: in The Banquet of the Rose (Не горюй!).
  • The music for half of Danelija's films was written by the Georgian composer Giya Kancheli . As a present to the director, Kancheli wrote a piece for a string orchestra, Eine kleine Daneliada .
  • In Danelija's films there is always a certain " R. Hobua " under the names of the extras . This man doesn't appear in any of the films. In fact, Rene Hobua is a Georgian construction worker Danelija once met.
