Gerd Doerry (born May 2, 1929 in Berlin ; † September 14, 2013 there ) was a German educational scientist with a focus on adult education and social education .

Life

Doerry says he had a carefree childhood, but since 1938 as a " first degree half-breed " (father was German , mother had Jewish roots ), he became an outsider and was ashamed of his mother. Like his mother and his adaptive father, he survived National Socialism and the war years relatively unscathed . In 1948 he finished school with the Abitur . He then studied philosophy , psychology , sociology , and Arabic studies at the Free University of Berlin (FUB) , later in the USA at Ohio State University , except for Arabic studies, and then graduated from the FUB in 1953.

After graduating, Doerry worked as a course instructor at Berlin adult education centers and wrote a dissertation , supervised by Hans-Joachim Lieber . He received his doctorate ( Dr. phil. ) On December 19, 1957 at the Philosophical Faculty of the FUB, where he later worked as a research assistant to Fritz Borinski. He was unable to complete a habilitation that he had started as a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and broke it off in 1968. In 1970 he was appointed to the Academic Council , and in 1971 to a professor under the law on technical colleges (FHSG) in the state of Berlin.

On May 15, 1976 Gerd Doerry was appointed full professor of educational science (adult education) at the Berlin University of Education. After the integration of the college of education into the FUB, he was appointed professor for social education and adult education on April 1, 1980, which he held until his retirement on September 30, 1997. His teaching and examination activities, which he had been limited since then, ended in 2004.

Areas of activity

At the Free University of Berlin, Doerry has been involved since the 1960s in setting up a department for extracurricular education , which has since been considered the foundation of the Institute for Social Education and Adult Education. The experience he gained in the Anglo-Saxon countries with the cooperation between the university and further training practice was formative and the FUB thus gained a pioneering role in this country. His main research interests included adult learning, communication , group dynamics and classroom practice . And he devoted himself with "great intensity to teaching", as it is called in an obituary .

In 1986 Doerry was appointed advisory editor of the magazine "Gruppendynamik", which was renamed in 2000 to "Group Dynamics and Organizational Consulting", and in 1978 as spokesman for the adult education section of the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE).

Together with other university teachers Doerry led from 1971 to 1995 on behalf of the Senator for Education (Berlin) as an educational training group dynamic seminars for teachers of all grade levels through. From 1990 to 1998, Doerry and Astrid Riehl-Emde regularly lead self-awareness groups for course instructors in adult education . Gerd Doerry ended his long-term work in the editorial team of the magazine “Group Dynamics and Organizational Consulting” on March 31, 2006, almost nine years after his retirement.
