Gerd Meyer (political scientist)

Gerd Meyer (born July 8, 1942 in Berlin ) is a German political scientist .

Life

Meyer studied political science , history and German studies in Hamburg , Tübingen and at the Free University of Berlin from 1961 to 1968 after graduating from Scharnhorstgymnasium in Hildesheim . In 1969 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. with a thesis on Soviet Germany policy in 1952. 1969/70 he stayed for research at Harvard University , where he was an associate at the Russian Research Center . He completed his habilitation1970 to 1976 in political science with a thesis on "Bureaucratic rule in the USSR". In 1977 he was appointed professor of political science at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . From 1979 to 1981 and 1994/95 he was director of the Institute for Political Science there. In 1984 he was visiting professor at Columbia University . From 1986 to 1991 he was the spokesman for the interdisciplinary working group on GDR and German research and the GDR state research focus at the University of Tübingen. In 1991 he held another visiting professorship at the Graduate School for International Studies in Denver . In 1991/92 he was Dean of the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Tübingen. In 1994 and 1997 he was visiting professor at the Universities of St. Petersburg and Moscow , in 1995 at the Jackson School for International Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle , in 2001 at the Collegium Civitas in Warsaw , again at Lomonossow University in Moscow in 2002 and at the Central European University in Budapest . Meyer retired on October 1, 2007 .
