Gerhard Löffler (cyclist)

Gerhard Löffler (born December 30, 1933 in Berlin ) is a former German cyclist and multiple champion of the GDR in track cycling .

Athletic career

He started cycling in 1949 at the BSG Derby Pankow club. As a teenager he was already a Berlin and GDR champion in street races and with the team. As part of the specialization practiced at that time in the GDR, he mainly drove track races in the early 1950s. From 1952 to 1954 he won the championship title in the 4000 meter individual pursuit , now starting for the BSG Rotation Leipzig Ost (later SC Rotation Leipzig ). After there was no further increase in performance on the track, he switched to road cycling in 1956. He joined the Dynamo Berlin sports club . In the 1957 GDR tour , he immediately came second in the overall ranking (winner Eddy Pauwels , Belgium ) and won the 9th and last stage from Senftenberg to Berlin .

In 1958 he was able to win the Tour of Egypt and the mountain classification of the Belgian Tour of 9 Provinces . At the end of the season he was 3rd in Rund um Berlin . 1959 followed five more successes in smaller races, then he ended his career.
