Gerhard I. (Verden)
Gerhard von Hoya († May 4, 1269 ) was Bishop of Verden from 1251 to 1269 . Both in the count's family and among the bishops of Verden he was the first bearer of his first name.
Life
Gerhard came from the family of the Counts of Hoya . He was a son of Count Heinrich I von Hoya , the Minden Bishop Wedekind I von Hoya was his brother, another brother, Burchard, was provost of the cathedral in Verden from 1253 to 1282 .
Gerhard is documented as provost in Verden from 1248. As a bishop he tried to settle the disputes with the nobility. In 1267 he reached a settlement which confirmed the hereditary character of the collegiate fiefs, which the nobility claimed to be valid law. In 1259, he granted the city of Verden city rights under Bremen law . This granted the bishop a strong position as lord of the city, which was restricted in 1269 by the restriction of the episcopal bailiff's rights. He made donations to the Verden cathedral chapter , including shares in the Lüneburg salt works .
