occupation

The Ghosts of the Titanic (Original title: Ghosts of the Abyss ) is an American documentary film directed by James Cameron from 2003 . The film shows the exploration of the wreck of the RMS Titanic, which sank in the North Atlantic in 1912, in twelve diving expeditions . Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media , the documentary was filmed in 3D for IMAX theaters and is the first 3D film to be released by Disney .

action

Bill Paxton, one of the actors from Cameron's feature film Titanic , embarks on the Russian expedition ship Akademik Mstislaw Keldysch to explore the wreck of the Titanic at a depth of almost 4,000 meters together with James Cameron and a team of marine scientists, technicians and historians . Much of the documentary is commented on from the point of view of the actor.

Preparations for the dives are underway on board the ship. The two special submarines Mir 1 and Mir 2 , which enable up to three people to dive directly to the shipwreck, are equipped with specially developed 3D cameras. With the two remote-controlled Remotely Operated Vehicles , called Jake and Elwood , it is possible to take pictures of the interior of the Titanic .

After extensive preparations and a dive lasting several hours, the two submarines arrive on the seabed. During this dive the bow of the wreck is visited. The submersible submarines drive over the front deck to the command bridge, the walls of the ship are shown and a view of the cargo hatches and cabins is thrown from outside.

On another dive, the two remote-controlled diving robots penetrate the shaft of the large staircase to the first-class dining room on D deck. The intact stained glass windows and parts of the wall paneling can be seen. Up to now unknown wrought iron gates are discovered at the passenger entrance to the first class. After exploring Henry Sleeper Harper's luxury stateroom , you'll also tour Molly Brown's staterooms , the private promenade on Deck B, Bruce Ismay's suite, and Captain Smith's stateroom . Other destinations include the third-class lounge and one of the cargo holds where the remains of a Renault can be seen. The robots finally reach the boiler rooms and the large steam boilers located deep down in the ship via the stokers' lounge.

After an explanation on the research ship about the course of the sinking of the Titanic , the crew starts to explore the stern . Shown are the ship's propellers and the large piston engines at the point where the ship broke, which broke in two when it sank. In addition, the deep-sea inhabitants , unknown creatures and organisms that are in and around the shipwreck and also contribute to the decay of the Titanic are researched. Next, the scenario of the sinking and the occupation of the lifeboats are re-enacted, as well as the current state of the radio rooms. The numerous victims of the ship disaster are also remembered.

One of the diving robots fails on one of the last dives. After a lot of effort and skill, the team can finally recover the robot. During this filming, which took place in August and September 2001, the team learned of the terrorist attacks on September 11th . Affected by the event, the crew also commemorates the victims of the sinking of the Titanic and the many helpers who were among the ship's crew and passengers. During the last dive, they put down a memorial plaque and position it on the stern, which sank last in the sinking and where a large part of the more than 1500 victims sought refuge from the ice-cold water until the end.

background

  • For the IMAX -3D documentary film, the Reality Camera System 3-D was used as the 3D camera recording process .
  • During the exploration of the shipwreck, scenes of passengers and crew or original photos from 1912 are faded into the dilapidated deck structures and cabins with the help of CGI in order to give an impression of how the respective place used to look. In order to enable the viewers to orientate themselves, the rooms are reconstructed in a simplified way using computer animation.
  • The two diving robots Jake and Elwood were named after the Blues Brothers .

reception

The reviews were mostly positive. Above all, the technical effort and the high quality of the recordings were praised.

  • Kino.de finds the film amazing , instructive and entertaining and it is IMAX 3D in perfection . The documentation is an ideal complement to Cameron's "Titanic" , but the scientific aspect of the company would be neglected .
  • The ghostly integrity of the ship is film-zeit.de more impressive than the technical effort. The tracking shots through the premises would take the viewer straight on board and make the early 20th century tangible .
  • Even Roger Ebert was impressed by technology and images. However, he criticizes the 3D process as a mistake , because it distracts attention away from the content and toward the process .
