Giambattista Spinola (also Giovanni Battista Spínola ; born September 20 or 21, 1615 in Madrid , † January 4, 1704 in Rome ) was Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a famous Genoese family and was the fourth of the twelve children of Luca Spinola and his wife Battina Lomellini. Giambattista Spinola was a nephew of Cardinal Giandomenico Spinola and uncle of Cardinals Giovanni Battista Spinola the Younger and Niccolò Spinola . Other cardinals from the same extensive family were Agostino Spinola , Filippo Spinola , Orazio Spinola , Agustín Spínola , Giulio Spinola , Giorgio Spinola , Giovanni Battista Spinola , Girolamo Spinola and Ugo Pietro Spinola . He became a Doctor iuris utriusque doctorate and received the diaconate .

On May 18, 1648, Giambattista Spinola was appointed Archbishop of Acerenza e Matera , with the dispensation that he had not yet received the ordination . He was ordained bishop on June 14, 1648 in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore by Cardinal Giulio Cesare Sacchetti . On November 10, 1664 he was appointed Archbishop of Genoa , which he had to give up on March 16, 1681. Pope Clement X appointed him secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regular Clerics . From October 26, 1675 to September 1, 1681 he was Governor of Rome and Vice- Camerlengo of the Roman Church.

In the consistory of September 1, 1681 Pope Innocent XI. put him in the college of cardinals , he was the prima creatura of this Pope. Spinola received the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santa Cecilia on September 22nd of the same year. He took part in the 1689 conclave that Pope Alexander VIII elected. From January 8, 1691 to January 9 of the following year, he was chamberlain of the Holy Cardinals College . He was a participant in the conclave of 1691 , in which Innocent XII. was elected Pope. On February 20, 1696 Giambattista Spinola moved to the titular church of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura and on April 7, 1698 to that of Santa Maria in Trastevere . At the 1700 conclave , from which Clemens XI. when Pope emerged, he also attended.

Giambattista Spinola died on January 4, 1704 at around one noon and was buried in the Roman church of San Salvatore delle Coppelle in front of the main altar.
