Gian Battista Viotti International Music Competition
The Gian Battista Viotti International Music Competition ( Concours International de Musique Gian Battista Viotti ), named after the Italian composer and violinist Gian (Giovanni) Battista Viotti , is an international music competition that takes place every year in Vercelli , Italy .
history
The music competition was founded in 1950 by the violinist Joseph Robbone from Vercelli, who directed it until 1985. Today it is organized by the Società del Quartetto . The competition started with a piano competition , followed by a singing competition in 1951. In the following years, competitions for violin , chamber music , oboe , guitar , bassoon , trumpet , dance and composition were also held. Since 2006 the competitions have alternated between singing and piano every two years.
Since its inception, thousands of artists have participated, many of whom have achieved international fame. These include Liliana Cosi , Luciana Savignano , Bernard Ładysz , Joaquín Achúcarro , Cécile Ousset , Daniel Barenboim , Claudio Abbado , François-Joël Thiollier , Rafael Orozco, Pavel Gililov , Boris Bloch , Angela Hewitt , Jean-Yves Thibaudet , Salvatore Accardo. , Reiko Watabe , Domenico Nordio , Piero Cappuccilli , Raina Kabaivanska , Mirella Freni , Leo Nucci , Renato Bruson , Luis Alva, Giuseppe Giacomini , Luciano Pavarotti and Sumi Jo .
The jury members included Carlo Maria Giulini , Yehudi Menuhin , Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli , Franco Corelli , Massimo Mila, Piero Rattalino , Birgitt Nilsson , Carl Orff , Aureliano Pertile , HC Robbins Landon , Elizabeth Schwarzkopf , Renata Scotto , Joan Sutherland , Mariano Stabile , Galina Ulanova , Virginia Zeani and Paolo Montarsolo .
The competition has been a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions since 1957 .
