Life

Gilberto Agustoni came from a family from Balerna deeply rooted in the Catholic faith, three of whose five sons received the sacrament of ordination . One of his brothers was the church musician Luigi Agustoni . After completing school in Schaffhausen and Lugano , he first studied philosophy and theology in Rome , then because of the Second World War in Freiburg im Üechtland . He completed his studies with a doctorate in theology and was ordained a priest in 1946 by Bishop Angelo Jelmini .

He then became assistant vicar in the Catholic Action of the Diocese of Lugano . In 1950, on the personal recommendation of Alfredo Ottaviani , Agustoni entered the service of the Vatican , studied law at the Lateran University in addition to his administrative duties and passed the licentiate examination. In the years during and after the Second Vatican Council he was largely responsible for the meaningful implementation of the liturgical reforms , whereby he was primarily responsible for the coordination between the department of sacraments on the one hand and liturgy on the other. Pope Paul VI appointed him advisor to the Congregation for Divine Worship and in 1970 auditor at the Roman Rota .

On December 18, 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed him Secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy and ordained him episcopal on January 6 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were Eduardo Martínez Somalo , substitute for the Cardinal Secretary of State , and Josè Tomás Sánchez , Archbishop Emeritus of Nueva Segovia . As a titular bishopric he received Caprulae in the Italian region of Veneto . Agustoni worked on the creation of the new Roman Catechism and numerous other Vatican pronouncements. In 1991 he became a member of the Supreme Court of the Catholic Church, the Apostolic Signature , which he then headed from 1992 to 1998 as Prefect . He was also appointed head of the Vatican Supreme Court of Appeal .

In 1994 John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santi Urbano e Lorenzo a Prima Porta in the college of cardinals . On February 24, 2005 he was elevated to cardinal priest while retaining his title diakonia ( pro hac vice ) .
