geography

The place is ten kilometers north of the city center of Épinal , the capital (chef-lieu) of the Vosges department.

history

In 1831 a gatehouse and an old Roman bridge were discovered and uncovered. In 1853 two bronze bracelets from the Hallstatt or Latène period were found near Girmont , which archaeologists associate with the possibility of the existence of a Roman camp for monitoring the Moselle in what is now Girmont.

Around the year 1000 Girmont was called Goërici Mont , named after Goericus , Bishop of Metz from 614 to 629. The Maltese cross in the coat of arms indicates a group of Templars who settled near Girmont.

During the Ancien Régimes, Girmont was the seat of a mayor's office under the influence of the diocese of Metz . Ecclesiastically Girmont belonged to the deanery Épinal in the diocese of Saint-Dié .

Economy and Transport

Agriculture plays a subordinate role in Girmont. Due to the proximity to the industrial areas and business parks of Thaon-les-Vosges and Épinal , commuters form the largest group of workers in Girmont.

In Thaon-les-Vosges on the opposite side of the Moselle, there is a connection to the motorway-like RN 57 from Nancy to Épinal and to the TER Lorraine railway network ( Blainville-Damelevières – Lure railway ).
